Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaah

I need advice on the following situation.
There is a situation where a person has lent someone some money which will be paid back inshaAllaah, but do not know when (could be paid within the next 10 years as the person can not afford to return his debt yet, due to it being a large amount). Allaahu Alim.
When one pays his obligatory zakaat on property and wealth etc, do they take into consideration paying zakaat on money that they have lent.
I would be very grateful if someone can inshaAllaah shed some light on this matter.
Jazakallaahu khayr.

Salaamun alayki sister Amatullaah,

Shaikh bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) was asked the following:

Question: I am owed a debt by one of the brothers, so am I required to pay its Zakaah?

Answer: If the debt that is owed to you is due upon people who have money and they able to pay - whenever you request the money they can give you your right (i.e. the loaned money) - then you must pay the Zakaah on that money every time a year passes on it. This is just as if you had the money with you, and it is with them as a trust that they are holding for you. However, if the person who owes you the debt is in difficult circumstances, and he cannot pay the money back to you, or he is not in difficult circumstancs but he putting you off (i.e. deferring your payment) and you are not able to take it from him, then the correct opinion from the statements of the scholars is that you are not required to pay Zakaah on that money, until you actually have the money back from this delaying person or this person who is in difficult circumstances. So when you get your money back, and you keep it for a year after that, you pay it's Zakaah after you have had it for a complete year from the time you took possession of it. And if you give the Zakaah for one year from the previous years during which it was in the possession of the person in difficult circumstances or the person who was delaying repaying you, then there is no harm in that. Some of the people of knowledge have said this. However, you are not required to give it (Zakaah) except for the future (forth coming year) when you have taken possession of the money from the person in difficult circumstances or the person who is delaying repayment. And you wait for a year after you get it back from them. Then when a year has passed on that money (after getting the money back) you are required to pay the Zakaah. This is the preferred view.
