As salaamu alaikum

Would someone please pose this question to the 'Ulamaa? I would like to know if it permissible to bow at Judo class. The bow in Japanese culture is the same as a handshake in other cultures. The bow is done as follows: two individuals facing each other with their hands at their sides, bend over slightly (less than a 45 degree angle, so it does not resemble ruku) while keeping their head up and their eyes on their opponent? Note both individuals bow at the same time. Please present the full question to the 'Ulamaa so all angles can be understood. If any further clarification is needed please contact me at shariyf.abdulqabid@verizon.net

Yaa Akhee, I don't know much about Judo but in Tae Kwon Do students are also required to salute the flags (done by bowing ones head), which means both the American flag and Korean flag if you are here in the States.  So maybe this should be posed to the Ulemah also insha'Allaah.

As Salaam Alaikum

If it is impermissible to stand up when the muslim rulers enter into a room, so as not to imitate the Kuffar in exalting their leaders, do you think it would be permissible to bow to another individual, (especially) someone less in status as them? Please forward this question to the Ulamaa.

Furthermore, I have attached an article that will show you that bowing is not just a japanese or asian martial arts custom, it is a social custom that is done in many different settings and it an imitation of the Kuffar in their customs, their performance of martial arts and their religions.  By know means am I saying that martial arts are haram, but I reetirate that the bowing in martial arts came from asian cultures and is integrally linked to asian religions. Although their may be different degrees of bowing, is rukoo (bowing) still rukoo (bowing)?  So ask the question, when did the Companions bow?  Did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah Sallahu Alihi Salaam, bow when they were wrestling?  Did they bow when they met their teachers, their elders, their parents, or those who owned them (if they were a slave)? Or did they bow for Allah.

Wa Alaikum Salaam
