is anyone aware of any quality distance/online education courses that award degrees?

I have been searching many jobs overseas who require at least a bachelors degree for their jobs(TEFL, IT, Medical careers, business Etc)
seeing as it is increasingly becoming a standard requirement. I would like to make hijrah and be able to have the correct qualifications and would wish to earn my degree online and avoid the fitnah of a mixed classroom bi'ithnillaah...

has anyone taken this route or able to recommend a good legitimate quality program? This would beneifit my husband and possibly myself insha Allah..

Yes there are good sitance/e-learning degree programs out there

There are a couple factors that need to be considered:

1.  The type of degree/course study being saught and
2.  Budget

Many of the online courses out there are pricey, which coincides with the current rise in school prices, wallaahu 'alim.

Some schools you may want to look at are:

1.  UMUC
2.  University of Phoenix Online
3.  AIU Online

All of the programs are legit non diploma mill schools, insha Allaah.

It is important to have a degree that in accredited so with that in mind there are a few good ones out there. All your husband has to do is go to google and type in online degrees, after that there will be a list of about 10 universities that he can choose from and all of them are accredited alhamdulilah. Depending upon what he wants to major in will be the determining factor of which online program that he chooses.

Presently, I am in an online program and its the best decision in terms of returning back to college after many years that have made alhamdulilah. You have the time to take care of your family responsibilities and not worry about the free mixing. It can be a little costly so tell him to try and apply for as many grants as he can and inshaa Allaah that will help a great deal. One great thing is the fact that online colleges takes less time than the conventional one and that is what attracted me to this type of program besides the advice from the ulema of not mixing with men etc.

May Allaah bless you and your family with success in this endeavor and grant a home in the land of tawheed amen.

May Allah give you good. Ameen.  A few pointers:
-Contact the Ministry of Education of the counrty you are planning to go to and ask about their policies on distant learning degrees.
-Contact the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, which is the governemnt's database for accredited colleges and universities.  They have a website with a thorough database.  Type the name of the college/university and the database will inform you if the institution is accredited or not.
Also, in closing, I recommend that sisters who want to further their education try online degrees. It protects them from intermingling with men.

Salaamu Alaykum,

I have BBA in Finance and Marketing.  My experience in corporate America has shown me that U.S. companies have what I refer to as the "Ralph Lauren Syndrome" regarding degrees: you must have the best "name brand" for anyone to respect it.  If employers in the Muslim Lands are also like this, then on-line degrees will not get respect or open the doors that traditional degrees will.

There is a lot of "game" in the business of higher education.  I know for a fact that there is about an 80% overlap in a decent undergraduate business curriculum and an mba program, which makes one question the need to go back to school in the first place.  The true reason is, the companies force you to.  If an honors graduate in finance from a school like Rutgers (N.J.) goes up against a regular graduate from Wharton (University of penn's world renowned busines school); guess who's going to get the job!  That's despite the fact that they probably studied from the exact same text books, same business cases, and their professors got their exam questions from same bank of test questions supplied by the publisher--and this scenario is typical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On-line degree programs are most beneficial for people with years of experience working in their desired field, and need a degree to move up in their firm.  Their degree is good for them as long as they remain with the company.  If they leave their firm, the value of the degree plummets, and their experience goes along with it.  I've seen administrative assistants/secretaries in human resources departments use them to a degree of success.  I once warned a former colleague of mine from getting an mba from Univ. of Pheonix, and unfortunatlely he ignored me.  The company did not respect it, so it didn't open the doors he expected.  He wasted a lot of time and $$$ because he eventually had to go to a traditional mba program.

Umm Tasneem gave you good advice regarding accredidation.  If the program you're in is NOT accredited, then you're wasting your $$$ and your time.  I've seen traditional schools offer on-line courses, and certificates in disciplines usually lasting 1-4 weeks, but I don't recall I seeing them offer on-line degrees.  Investigate the on-line option thoroughly before you spend your $$$!  My advice: I'd go the traditional route.

barakallahu feekum to the replies and  leads toward  choosing a degree online

i noticed the previous poster suggest the traditional route... that being attending college on the physical campus, provided it is a "name brand" school...

there arises three main problems, which had me invesitgate the possibility of obtaining an online degree in the first place....

1.) I dont live nearby any "name brand" schools, which would mean i would have to travel quite far to go to one...

2.) I have a family and children to take care of, and attending a campus school would force me to leave the home and will affect my homelife in ways i can only imagine

3.) Traditional campuses included the freemixing between the men and women

so right now the traditional route is not an option for me

As salaamu 'alaykum war rahmatullaahi wa barakatu.

Actually online degrees have become more and more accepted throught many industries, from computers to interior design since most of them, if not all, belong to already known accreditted universities wallaahu 'alim.

Here is a list of the top accreditted online universities in the United States with links to the official sites and a brief summary of their Degree programs.

As-salaam alakum

Ya Ikwan wa Akawhat
Stop wasting your time pondering about these schools the name brand online colleges, such as University of Phoenix, AIU etc. Unless you have money like that, where you can spend it as you wish. These programs are as they say, dedicated for the online student, however the cost is outrageous!

This is a matter that I have been looking into for some time so I believe I know what I am talking about. And Allah knows best. So I will share with you all somewhat I have learned about the online programs.

I am currently a registered, distance-learning student with a university in my home state that offers online programs. I also believe these programs are very beneficial for the one who; has to work, women, made hijrah or just traveling.

1: Forget the Phoenix, AIU, and the UMUC.  They cost too much!

2: Start within your state (Out of State schools cost you more). At the distance learning offices of the prospective school. Each state has accredited instutions that offers online programs at in-state tuitions[/color.  That is the Key word, Instate tuition which = Low cost (less money spent) for you. I am a North Carolina resident so I can choose from any school In State (as to receive the lower tuition). So within N.C. you have UNCG, FSU, WSU, Duke, Carolina, ECU and others that offer a wide range of online programs at the bachelors, and masters' level. And the majority are strictly online programs. The degree's offered are many. Take some of the universities of NC as an example.http://www.northcarolina.edu/content.php/apps/disted/searchresults-elearning.php

3.Apply for Financial Aid like FAFSA. There is a lot of free money floating around out there for students that you don't have to pay back. Now Im not refering to the loans as they are Harram. I am talking about the grants. (Grants = Free Money)

4. Apply early to more than one university. Be advised promptly before the semester starts. Classes fill up quickly. Confirm with your advisor that the program is 100% online (some programs may require lab work etc, but the majority do not). Believe it or not I have seen some nursing programs that are 100% online. Coming straight from your computer.

5.Secure a reliable Internet connection whereever you may be in the world. Just as it is called, online you must be connected to the internet.
Another perk about these programs is that you can be anywhere in the world that has access to the Internet, completing your degree at your pace (amount of classes) and on your schedule.
These degrees are popping up in abundance every where so look well and you're sure to find something suitable Inshallah.

And All success lies with Allah.
