As salaamu 'alaikum

I would like the help of the muslims, with a strong grasp of the Arabic language, to please help me find the correct definition of the name:

Zaahir= زاهر

When I accepted Islam this was the name I chose. I got as a meaning for ZAAHIR= shining, brightness, from a book which after coming to Salafiyyah became clear was no good.

Now in 2004, I have gotten from two brothers that it has a meaning of "flower" or like this. So it has become a concern because if this is the real meaning I will have to change it.

So I ask from the muslims who have a strong knowledge of the Arabic language to assist me in finding the true meaning.

BarakAllaahu feekum

as-salaamu 'alaykum,

it seems like ظاهر (Dhaahir) is closer to the meaning you chose the name for.

i just looked in the mawrid muyassar dictionary and it says that زاهر (zaahir) does mean what you had intended (bright, brilliant, shining).

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaah.

The root ( ز - هـ - ر ) refers to gleaming brightness, commonly used to describe the whiteness of flowers, or the outward beauty of things.  Allaah ta'aalaa says:

وَلاَ تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَى مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِ أَزْوَاجًا مِنْهُمْ

زَهْرَةَ الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ وَرِزْقُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَى

"Do not strain your eyes looking for that which We given some groups of them to enjoy, it is (only) the zahrah (visual beauty) of the worldly life to test them.  And the provisions of your Lord are better and more lasting."
[Soorah Taa-Haa:131]

Linguiustically, a zaahir can refer to:

[1] An attractive white-skinned man;

[2] An attractive white-skinned man with red tones;

[3] A beautiful flower;

[4] Or a man whose color is gleaming compared to other men's colors.

And from the salaf there were those named Zaahir and Zuhayr (a little Zaahir), like Zuhayr ibn Harb, and of course the famous taabi'ee:

Muhammad

ibn

Shihaab

az-

Zuhree

Two Companions named [Zaahir]:

[1] Zaahir ibn Haraam al-Ashja'ee who fought in Badr, he lived in the desert and used to give the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) gifts.  Anas said that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) used to love him. [Musnad Ahmad 3/161]

[2] and Zaahir ibn Zaahiribn al-Aswad al-Aslamee, gave bay'ah under the tree, lived in Koofah. [Alistee'aab p.258]

May Allaah be pleased with them both.
