Bismillaahi was salaatu was salaamu 'ala Rasoolillaahi wa 'ala alihi wa sahbihi wa sallam, wa ba'd:

As-salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Regarding sideburns, are they permissible? I have a son who is 6 years old and goes to the barber.  He usually gets his hair cut low, a "square" in the back, a "shape up" and sideburns (my personal preference is the longer the better, on him).

It occurs to me I should ask if these are permissible?  Does the fact that my son is only 6 years old influence any fataawa on sideburns, if indeed they exist?  Also, is having sideburns considered imitation of the kuffar?

Please reply with adillah, as this is for my benefit as well as my ex-husband.

Definition of sideburn: 'beard grown down the side of a man's face in front of the ears'.

al-Imaam, the Muftee of our time, ash-Shaikh Abdul Azeez ibnu Baaz, rahimahullaah explained that  the lihyah or beard is that thing which grows on the cheeks and chin.

He said that it is obligatory to leave the hair that grows on the cheeks and chin, and not to shave it or cut it.

The Imaam ash-Shaafi'ee of our time, ash-Shaikh Muhammad ibnu Saalih  al-Uthaimeen rahimahullaah has said:

The definition of the beard as mentioned by the linguist is the hair of the face, jawbone and cheeks, in the sense that everything that grows on the cheeks, jawbone and chin is part of the beard. Removing any part of it also comes under the heading of sin, because the Messenger sallallaahu alaihe wa sallam said:

"Leave the beard alone" and "Let the beard grow". And Allaah knows best.

As-salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Alhamdulillah! My son will not be getting his sideburns shaped up anymore.  The adillah for no longer doing this will also be forwarded to his father, for his benefit.

Barakallahu Feek for your quick response, with adillah!
