as-Salaamu 'alaykum -

Please foster the growth of Islaam by helping people from your community to go seek knowledge.  Communities all over the place have no students of knowledge.  It is WAAJIB on a community to have some learned people amongst them to keep contact with the scholars, manage their Islaamic affairs and keep the community upon guidance and knowledge.  So if this is not being fulfilled, then the individuals become sinful until someone fulfills this community need!

What you can do:

Encourage the smart, young men of your community to set themselves toward the places of knowledge and become students so as to help the community one day.  Many times the elder brothers of a community become jealous when a young man shows great efforts in seeking knowledge or a willingness to go study.  So they tell him to calm down and be realistic, and unbeknowing to their own selves, deprive themselves from knowledge of the Deen, as this young man would be their teacher in 10 years or so.

So do not be jealous of the young men who aspire to be students, rather aid them morally and financially.  Set up a community scholarship to send hiim $200 or $100 monthly or whatever you can, even $50, so that he can buy books and not be forced to discontinue his studies due to financial problems!  Ask Allaah to increase your love and concern for him, and to make you humble enough to sit with him and learn from him when he returns!

The future of our communities depends on this.  If our brothers and sisters would recognize the importance of this issue and put forth the right efforts and the right follow-up, in 5-10 years from now, we would witness a HUGE change in the Salafee communities in the West, the spread of clarity, and the dispelling of much of the fitnah that is so widespread.

Encourage these young men, help them, advise them with sincerity, send them to the scholars right away, put their hands in the hands of the students who are known for their clarity and closeness to the scholars.  This way, they will be upon the right way from the start and their years will all be beneficial, they will be busy studying at the 'ulamaa's lessons, reviewing the material, memorizing the proofs and texts, implementing what they learn.

Åöäö ÇÓúÊóØóÚúÊó Ýóßõäú ÚóÇáöãÇð¡ ÝóÅöäú áóãú ÊóÓúÊóØöÚú Ýóßõäú ãõÊóÚóáøöãÇð¡ æóÅöäú áóãú ÊóÓúÊóØöÚú ÝóÃóÍöÈøóåõãú¡ æóÅöäú áóãú ÊóÓúÊóØöÚú ÝóáÇó ÊõÈúÛöÖúåõãú.
"If you are able, then be a scholar; if you are not able then be a student; and if you are not able, then love them; and if you are not able, then do not hate them."   -'Umar ibn 'Abdil-'Azeez

So let these young men take all steps to become scholars, may Allaah grant them success.  When we say there are no scholars in the West, this does not mean that there CAN NEVER BE ANY scholars in the West.  Allaah has brought people from disbelieving societies to Islaam in the past, and then to the path of knowledge, and they became scholars of Islaam.  Let these young men go out to seek knowledge hoping that Allaah will make them ULAMAA', and may Allaah bless them and aid them, and make them 'ulamaa', rabaaniyyeen, 'aamileen, du'aat ilal-haqq...

May Allaah grant you success and bless your efforts.

In al-hamdalillah wa salaatu wa salaamu ala rasoolillah wa ba?ad.

Jazak Allahu kheir ya Aba Moosa for you post. I could not agree with you more. However there is another side to this that I hope will be beneficial to mention. There are some parents and elders in the west who do earnestly try to point the youth towards a life of seeking knowledge. However these efforts are often countered by other previously existing problems and outside factors. Included is a list issues that may positively or negatively effect your efforts:

1.     Strive to provide for your children with a moderate income. Often times youth who grow up in an environment of extreme poverty become obsessed with dreams of earning alot of money and want nothing to do with anything that may prevent them from that. For this person, a life of seeking (religious) knowledge or even performing obligatory acts of worship become a distant second to the affairs of the dunya.

2.    Avoid working night or odd hour jobs.

Allah says: æóÌóÚóáúäóÇ Çááøóíúáó áöÈóÇÓðÇ æóÌóÚóáúäóÇ ÇáäøóåóÇÑó ãóÚóÇÔðÇ
" And we have made the night as a covering. And we have made the day for seeking livelihood." Naba: 10,11

From experience, I know that children tend to stay up late or keep odd hours when a parent works a night job. Little sleep makes them tired and sluggish at school effecting their ability to learn and pay attention or their eagerness to take up knowledge seriously in the future. Children / adults for that matter avoid things that they feel they are not "good at."

3.    Advise and encourage the parents of exceptional youth. I hope that someone can bring to us the stories of how the ulamaa of the salaf got their start in knowledge. I remember something from the story of Imam Al-Nawawi (rahimahullah).  If I am correct I believe someone heard him make a beneficial statement as a youth. So the man went straight away to his (Al-Nawawi's) parents to advise them to send him to seek knowledge and not to waste his talent. Sometimes a youth is eager to seek knowledge but the parents are not willing or have other plans and discourage or prevent their kids from it. The parents should be spoken to and brought on board with the program.

4.    Avoid marrying a disbelieving lady.

Just to reiterate, that was a phenomenal advice. Allahu Akbar.

If I said anything that is right true and correct then it is from Allah, wal hamdulillah. And if I said anything that is wrong false or incorrect then it is from myself and the shaytan wa autho billah.

Wa salatu wa salaam ala nabiyana Muhammad.

Muhammad (Imam Al-Aajuree) informed us; he said: Abu muhammad Yahya b. Muhammad ibn Sa'id narrated to us; Al Husayn b. Al-Hasan al-Marwazi narrated to us; Ibn Al-Mubarak informed us; Salim al-Makki informed us; from Al-Hasan (al Basree), who said, " Whoever wishes to know who he is, let him present himself to the Quran."
