As-Salaamu'Alaikum wa'Rahma tu'Llah,

For those places in the Qur'an, that when recited one has to make sujda, like the last ayah of Suratul'Alaq and the other places (can you post all the places where we have to make sujda in the Qur'an?), is it wajib to make the prostration even when learning the surahs aside from when the Qur'an is being recited, since one may recite the ayah a series of times in a single sitting for the sake of memorization?

Also, if it is wajib, how would one make up these prostrations?

Baarak-Allaahu Feekum - wa sal-Allaahu wa-sallam 'alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad,
was-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahe wa-Barakaatuh.

Wa alaikum as salaam wa rahmatulillahi wa barakatuh,

Insha Allah if you look in the back of the Noble Qur?an, appendix 1 has a listing of prostration places in the Qur?an. In regards to Sajdat-ut-Tilawa, chapter 8 of Bulugh Al- Maram has a section, which has Ahadith and Ibn Hajar?s commentary on what the correct position is.

Here is an excerpt from the chapter:

Whether Sajdat-ut Tilawa (prostration during the Quranic recitation) falls within the category of Mashru? (legitimate), Sunna (supererogatory) or Wajib (compulsory); the majority of the scholars state it as Sunna, where as Imam Abu Hanifa maintains that the same is Wajib. There is also a difference of opinion among scholars as to whether or not one need to be in a state of ritual purity to observe this prostration.
He has also collected from Zaid bin Thabit ( may Allah be pleased with him ) : I recited to the prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) ?An-Najm? but he did not prostrate in it. [Agreed upon]

Insha Allah if you have the Darussalam printing, the Ahadith start on page 126, hadith number 269. If you don?t have it let me know and I will type it out.  May Allah aid you in reaching the truth.

Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

I simply wanted to shared a Hadith:

"It is narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah [radiyallahu anhu]that when the son of Adam [alaihi sallam]recites the Ayat of Sajdah and then fall down in prostration, the Shaytan goes into seclusion and weeps and says: Alas, and in the narration of Abu Kuraib the words are, Woe unto me, the son of Adam was Commanded to prostrate and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to Hell." Imam Muslim, Chapter Kitabul Emaan #144

Allah Knows best.

The Ruling on Sajdatut Tilaawah

Source: Fatawaa Islaamiyyah ,Volume 2. Pg 281-282 ,

1.     Fatwa by Ibn Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah)

Sajdatut Tilaawah is a confirmed Sunnah which should not be abandoned ,so if a person come to a verse in which there is a prostration, he should prostrate, whether he is reading from the Book, or reciting by heart or in prayer or outside prayer. As for the obligation, it is not obligatory and a person does not commit a sin if he does not do it. This is because it has been authentically reported from the Commander of the believers, ?Umar bin Khattaab, may Allaah be pleased with him, that he recited a Verse of prostration in Surah An-Nahl from the pulpit, then he descended and prostrated, then he recited it on another Friday and he did not prostrate. Then he said: ?Verily Allaah did not make the prostration incumbent upon us, except as we will?. This occurred in the presence of the Companions, may Allaah be pleased with them.

It has also been authentically reported that Zaid bin Thaabit recited a Verse of prostration in Surah An-Najm for the Prophet sallallaahu ?alaihi wa sallam and he did not prostrate, and if it had been obligatory, the Prophet sallallaahu ?alaihi wa sallam would have ordered him to do so. Therefore it is a preferred Sunnah which is better not to neglect, even if it be during a time when it is forbidden to pray, such as after the Fajr prayer or after the ?Asr prayer for example. Because there is a reason for this Sajdah- and the same for every prayer there is a reason for  ? it should be done, even if it be t a time when prayer is (normally) prohibited, as is the case with Sajdatut- Tilaawah, Tahiyyatul- masjid and the like.

2.     Fatwa by  Shaykh Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah)

Sajdatut- Tilaawah is a Sunnaah for the reciter and for the listener and it is not an obligation, nor is it prescribed for the listener except in the following of the reciter. So if you recite a Verse in which there is a prostration in you office or the place on instruction, it is lawful for you to make prostration and it is prescribed for the students to prostrate with you, because they are the listeners. And if you do not observe the prostration, there is no objection.

wassalaamu 'alaykum

Assalaamu'alaikum warahmatulllah

Barkallahu feek for the post,

I have a question regarding what you said
about the commentary, that it is
by Ibn Hajr,

The cover states that the brief notes is
from the book Subul-us-Salam written by
Muhammad bin Ismail As-Sanani

And also, in the copy that I have, the hadeeth
about the prostration due to the Qur'aan is
number 270.

Barakallahu feek,
Assalaamu'alaikum warahmatullah
