Bismi'llaah wal hamdu lilaah was-salaatu wa salaam 'ala Rasulilaah wa ba'd:

as-Salaamu 'Alaykum,

I have a question for those who are old enough to remember or those who have knowledge of the matter insha'Allaah...

I have read that after Malcolm X made hajj in 1964 he had a private meeting with King Faisal rahimahullaah.  It has been reported that during that meeting King Faisal strongly admonished Malcolm about the deviance of the so-called Nation of Islam and the teachings of it's leader Elijah Muhammed.  In addition to urging Malcolm to embrace true Islaam, he sent a little old man from Sudan back to America with Malcolm to help guide him in spiritual affairs.  The man was called Shaykh Hassan, he is the same person who washed Malcolm's body and performed his Janaaza after he was assassinated.  Shortly after Malcolm was buried in February of 1965 Shaykh Hassan disappeared and it was assumed that he returned back to either Saudi Arabia or the Sudan.

Does anybody know who this Shaykh Hassan from Sudan was?  Who did he study under and did he have any known students? Was he well known to the Scholars of Saudiyyah?  What ever became of him?  If anybody has info. on him, it would be highly appreciated.

Wa alaikum as sallam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu

The issue of who washed Malcom X's body and prayed his janaza is a bit strange. A number of years ago when I was in Marrakesh, Magrib, a miskeen American hizbee by the name of Muhammad Jaabir turned up. He said that he used to be the imaam of 'Masjid Diraar' in Abu Muflisah's community and that often he bragged about how HIS FATHER was the one who prayed Malcom X's janazah, washed the body etc. He also said that the janazah etc was done in secret so that the nation couldnt get at them because, according to him, the nation was also hounding his father. This Muhammad Jaabir is petrified of the nation. Anyway, i don't recall his fathers name, but he did mention that his father worked for Raabitah Al-Islamee (the Muslim world league)for many years.
I don't know if his father was this same man (i don't think so) or whether this hizbee miskeen was just fibbing.

as-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh!

Ya Abaa Yusuf, Jazakum Allaahu Khayran for this very interesting bit of information.  This was the first time I've heard of the details you've mentioned, which prompted me to do a little more research.  I have come across many contradictions concernig the details of Malcolm's life, however it does appear that there may be SOME TRUTH to the story of the "American hizbee" named Muhammad Jaabir, waAllaahu alam.  Just this morning I was researching a book titled SEVENTH CHILD: A Family Memoir of Malcolm X written by Rodnell P. Collins (the nephew of Malcolm X) and on page 187 Rodnell Collins recalls the following account:

quote:

"Imam Sheik Hassoun prepared the body for a Muslim funeral, and Imam Hashaam Jaaber said Islamic prayers at the burial site in Hartsdale, New York's Ferncliff Cemetery"

also on page 188,
quote:

"Ma (Malcolm's oldest sister) had much to take care of (immediately following Malcolm's assassination).  One of her first tasks was to arrange for Sheik Hassoun's return home.  He was anxious to leave, having become thoroughly disgusted with all the threats and violence"...

Rodnell Collins also had this to say on page 185, which I thought was strikingly similar to the claims made against the Salafiyoon of today:

quote:

"Some people in the OAAU, most notably James Shabazz, the organizations chief administrator, often dismissed Sheik Hassoun as a backward old man totally out of touch with the times.  When he walked through Harlem's streets in his Sudanese dress and with his sturdy walking cane, one could swear he was from the time of Moses."

And just as a couple of side notes I also learned the following:

The Shaykhs full name was Sheik Ahmed Hassoun and it was a man named  Surrur Sabban who had requested that the Shaykh be sent back to America with Malcolm X after his Hajj in 1964.
See page 365 of MALCOLM: The Life of a Man Who Changed Black America

Salaam 'alaykum,

The hizbee miskeen is being truthful about his fathers associations. His father is Hisham Jaaber. He is "old school" as far as the history of Islam in the US goes. He was with Raabitah al-Islaamee and I think he may have been one of the first students from the US to go to the Islamic University, wa Allaahu alim. I meet him when I first becames a muslim many years ago. The history and stories he has to say about Islam in the US is interesting but not ilmee. I believe he had a book at one time entitled "I buried Malcolm" or something similar, related to the topic.

Was salaam 'alaykum

Bismi'llaah

Shukran for all the information.  I currently live near the Mental Hospital that Malcolm's mother spent 27 years in, which sparked my interests.  I've always liked history (especially the history of Islaam) and I'm trying to establish if the elderly Sheik Ahmad Hassoun from Sudan had any clear Salafee connections. I've seen a picture of him (standing next to Malcolm) and he appeared to be in his mid to late 70's (the picture was taken in 1964) and he was wearing a white thobe, white turban, holding a wooden walking stick and had a long/bushy, pure-white beard. So if anyone knows anything else about the subject, please keep the information coming. It would also be interesting to know a little bit more about this Surrur Sabban, who requested Sheik Hassoun to return with Malcolm.

Your brother in Islaam,
Ibraheem Bukharee
