As-Salaamu'Alaikum brothers,

I have a question from a brother that is in need of a response from the Qur'an and/ or the Sunnah.

IF interest is huram then, how I am I going to get out of debt, and how am I going to get my credit repaired, and how could I go to school?

assalamu 'alaikum,

Sheikh Obayd al Jaabri hafidhahu llaah was recently asked a similar question for the one who has diffificulty paying his debts.

The sheikh explained that one should do his utmost to strive to remove his debts by working and at the same time asking Allaah with sincere du'aa to remove this burden from him. That we should not lose hope that it cannot be cleared.

As for your statement 'if interest is haram' then the question in itself is incorrect since there is no doubt that interest is haram and you paying your debts is not tied to the fact that whether interest is haram or not.

I remember sheikh al Banna saying that even if your are indebted to a non muslim you must strive to pay your debts for this is their right upon you. And the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam did not want to pray over the one who died with having not paid their debt and ordered others to pray over him. This to show the seriousness of becoming lazy in not paying off debts.
Allaahu 'alam

And as a Muslim who understands that Islaam means to submit to Allaah alone upon tawheed and upon obedience to Him, you get out of debt, fix your credit, and go to school in ways that are pleasing to Allaah, just as you behave in the rest of your affairs.

As-Salaamu'Alaikum,

Jazaakum'Allahu'Khair for the response. The brother wanted his question worded in this manner for his question to be responsed to precisely. Allahu'Musta'aan, Insha-Allah I hope all those in a similar situation benefit from your nasihah for verily indulging in interest is clearly haraam and Allah is the best of protectors and the best of those who protect and aid.
