From the section on the biography of Aboo Daawood as-Sijistaanee

He is well-known by his kunyah (Abee Daawood). He was born in 202H, he was born in Sijistaan. He sought knowledge early in his life. He was a taalibul-ilm before 18. Then he began to travel and seek knowledge. In the year 220H, he went to ?Iraaq. Aboo Ahmad (the leader), he asked Abee Daawood to move to al-Basrah. He took Basrah as a place of residence and a place of seeking knowledge. He heard from Moosaa Ibn Ismaa?eel, al-Waleed and others. He went to Koofah in the year 221H and he heard from al-Hasan Ibn Rabee? and Ibn Yunus and they were from the greater teachers of Imaam Muslim. He used to travel between Baghdad and he heard from Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal. He narrated his book, ?as-sunan? in al-Baghdad. Imaam Ahmad praised his book, ?as-sunan?. Before 222H he entered Makkah and benefited from ?Abdullaah who was from the narrators of al-Muwaata of Maalik. He also learnt from Hishaam Ibn Amaar who was from the teachers of al-Bukhaaree. He later went to Misr and learnt from Ahmad Ibn Saalih, the head of the muhaaditheen of Misr. His last travel was in 271H to Baghdad, before going to Basrah and he died in 275H (Rahimahullaah).

The Importantance of seeking knowledge (going out)

Allaah has prepared a great trial by the travels of Ahlul-Hadeeth. In the past, the ?Ulamaa would travel a month?s distance to benefit. Allaah has made it easy for us to listen to the ?Ulamaa with technology, on the internet. So how much more if one had to travel a dangerous path on the back of an animal to gain knowledge. Allaah has made it easy for us that we can travel in matters of hours. Even with the ease many of us find, we do not set out to seek knowledge. Yahyaa Ibn Ma?een used to know the rijaal (he [Aboo Daawood]studied from him) and ?Alee al-Madeenee. There was a great connection between Imaam Ahmad and Aboo Daawood, he (Aboo Daawood) benefited from him for a long time and he was a close companion of him and he accompanied the Imaam of Jarh wat-Ta?deel, Yahyaa Ibn Ma?een.

From the writings of Aboo Daawood

?How the Revelation Began?, ?The Reports about the Khawaarij?, ?The Supplication, ?Proofs of Prophet-hood?, ?The Refutation of the Qadariyyah?, 'The Book of Virtues of Abstinance? and ?as-Sunan?. From our studies we will look to the some of the points from Abdul-Muhsin al-Abbaad.

The ?Aqeedah of Aboo Daawood

The ?Aqeedah of Ahlul-Hadeeth, he lived in a time of strength in the groups. The Jahmiyyah, The Qadariyyah etc. A time when the people were stating that the Qur?aan is created. He was firm upon the Sunnah and the manhaj of ahlul-Hadeeth. He was a close companion of Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal. It was stated, ?He was from those who authored the books of Hadeeth and defended the Sunnah?. Imaam adh-Dhahabee, ?He was from the madhaab of the salaf, following and submitting to the sunnah and leaving off the speech of the people of rhetoric and desires.'

The Praise of the Scholars for Aboo Daawood

He was from the Imaams of the Sunnah,

an-Nawaawee said, ?The scholars are in agreement about the praise of him?. Moosaa Ibn Haroon, ?Aboo Daawood was created for Hadeeth.

Ahmad Ibn Hanbal said, ?Aboo Daawood was from the memorisers of Islaam, strong in knowing the chains of narration and in piety and from the protectors of hadeeth.?

al-Haakim said, ?He was the Imaam of Hadeeth in his time.?

Adh-Dhahabee, ?He was from the Imaams of the people of Fiqh?. To the points that was likened to Imaam Ahmad. He lived to 73 years of age and died on Youmul-Jumu?ah in Shawwaal, 275H, narrated from Aboo ?Ubayd al-Aajuree.

How do we benefit from the six books of Hadeeth?

al-kitaabus-Sunnah has a great and tremendous position. Shaykh ?Abdul-Muhsin al-'Abbaad continues on to mention that this was a book (as-sunan) that was great in fiqh. And these chapters show the fiqh of Aboo Daawood and his ability and ilmul-Hadeeth and the sanad.

Ibnul-Qayyim said, ?Allaah gave it (as-sunan) it?s place and it was a ruling/ref. point for the people of Islaam in his time.'

Shaykh ?Abdul-Muhsin continues, ?it takes preference over the others books of sunan (the other five).? The sunan is structured in ?as-sunan?. 35 books and 5274 ahadeeth. Between Aboo Daawood and the Rasool, there were 4 narrators. There are a number of explanations in his books.

The first point discussed from the book...

Definition of the Sunnah -

Fee lughah ? ?as-sunnah? ? A way or a path.

In the science ? ?as-sunnah? ? ?What is mentioned with regards to the meaning of the sunnah is that which has come from, been agreed upon, after of before revelation, from the Prophet.?

Ibn Raajib al-Hanbaalee ? ?The sunnah is a path that is tread upon and it comprises clinging to that which the Prophet came with and from his successors who came after him, their statements and their actions.?

The salaf would not ascribed all of that which has been mentioned. This is narrated upon al-Hasan al-Basree, Imaam al-Awzaa?ee and al-Fudayl Ibn Iyaad.
