Shaikhul Islaam Ibnu Taymiyah, rahimahullaah said in his book entitled ?al-Furqaan Bayna Awliyaa?ir Rahmaan wa Awliyaa?ish Shaytaan? (The Criteria between the Friends of Allaah and the The Friends of ash-Shaytaan:

The Saalih (Righteous) of the Believers is everyone who is virtuous from among the believers and they are believers, those fearing Allaah, the Awliyaa. Included amongst them are Aboo Bakr, ?Umar, ?Uthmaan and Alee and the remainder of the Ahlul Bay?atir Ridwaan (Pledge of Allegiance), those who gave the pledge under the tree.

They numbered one thousand four hundred (1,400) all of them are in Paradise as it is authentically documented in the Saheeh from the Prophet, sallallaahu ?alaihe wa sallam

لا يدخل النار احد ممن با يع تحت الشجرة

No one who gave the bay?ah (pledge of allegiance) under the tree will enter the Fire

ash-Shaikh Saalih ibnu Abdil ?Azeez Aalee ash-Shaikh provided us with some important principles, with regards to narrations that contain these technical terms like the above. The Shaikh said:

quote:
?No one who gave the bay?ah (pledge of allegiance) under the tree? has some related narrations with regards to utilizing the phrase ?no one will enter? [either the Paradise or the Hell-Fire].

(For example the following hadeeths)

?No one will enter the Hell-Fire who has [the size of ] a dust speck of Eemaan in his heart?.

?The Qattaat* will not enter the Paradise?.

?The killer will not enter the Paradise? and the like.

This ?negation of entering? in the view of the People of Knowledge sometimes means has the import of negating the basis [of the thing], sometimes what is intended is sempiternity or perpetuity and at times what is meant is precedence or priority.

But in this hadeeth ?No one who gave the bay?ah (pledge of allegiance) under the tree?, the negation has the implication of the base (of the thing), that is, ?no one will enter it by any means whatsoever? and whatever comes as a negation of entering Paradise and the like.

(As for the narration) ?The Qattaat, Nammaam will not enter Paradise? and the like, then the import here is precedence, meaning they will not enter firstly but rather they will be stalled (for awhile).

The opposite of that is the negation is ?prohibition? [found] within the texts, prohibiting the Hell-Fire and the like, with regards to Paradise.

For it will sometimes intend the exclusion of everlasting time, sometimes the exclusion of temporary time.

These - terms ? are necessary to be understood in light of what we have just mentioned

*A qattaat is someone who spreads nameemah. It was said that the one who spreads nameemah is the person who is with a group who are speaking, then he spreads gossip about them, and that the qattaat is the one who listens to them without them become conscious [of it], then he spreads hearsay about them.
