اسلام عليكم

There are alot of vitamins I have noticed that have an ingediant called " Geliten ".  For instance Vitamin E. I have heard that " Geletan " comes from the pig a number of times and have obstained from using all products that have this ingrediant " Geletan ". But my question is if Geletan is from the pig, where is it from the pig meaning like the hoof, and so on and so forth?  And is there any brand names that make these types vitamins that don't contain this ingredient.

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaah

I've read in an encyclopedia of foods that gelatin is extracted from the pig by boiling its skin and bones. All gelatin however is not made from pig. Other animals can be used to make gelatin, even fish and sometimes gelatin can be vegetarian. From what I know, gelatin is only used in the "cap" part of the pills so it's not the actual vitamins that have gelatin in them. When I asked a pharmacist about whether there were any vegetarian gelatin capped pills he replied that there weren't due to the fact that it costs too much to manufacture since there is no real demand for them. Wa Allaahu alem..

If it's regular vitamin pills you are looking for then there are plenty around without gelatin caps inshaa'allaah. One of them is "Centrum - Complete from A to Zink" which is available in most pharmacies (in UK anyhow).

In the Name of Allaah, the All-Merciful, may His complete Salaah and Salaam be upon His final Messenger, and upon all his family, Companions, and followers up to the Day of Judgement

To proceed...

As-salaamu Alaikum,

Most, if not all, of the major health food stores and chains, including GNC, Whole Foods, etc., sell versions of their supplements with kosher gelatin capsules.  This has probably been implemented because a great many of their customers are vegan or vegetarian and these stores definitely want to cater to this segment of the market.

Of course, kosher is not halal.  It would probably be prudent for the Muslims to contact the manufacturer of these products about their capsules and ask them specifically about the ingredients in these "kosher" gelatin capsules.

I say this because many Muslims equate kosher with halal in the market, but it is known that the standards of the Yahud are not ours, and they have no problem consuming or utilizing products made with pork by-products.  Nevertheless, we are also consumers of vitamins and other supplements and should be informed customers.  And Allah knows best about all matters.

Asallamu alaykum wa Rahmatullah:

There's a company called Solgar that has all-vegetarian Multivitimins, Vit E Gels, Prenatals, Men, and Womans fomula's.  They tend to be expensive but this website SOLGAR will ship them to you for 40%  of the store price.

As-salaamu-alaikum.

I just wanted to stress that we should contact the companies ourselves.  When I was pregnant with my first daughter I started to take prenatal vitamins.  Whenever I would take them I got sick to my stomach.  I had read the ingredients many times, and there was nomention of pork, but I just felt like there was something wrong.  I called the company to ask them if there was any pork derived ingredients and they said yes (it was in one of the vitamins).  I asked why it was not listed on the ingredients list and they said it was because it was an ingredient of one of the ingredients and the pork was an "inactive" ingredient.

Please note that the type of pill it was was one of those horse-pill type (the really big ones)and it was NOT in capsule form, so the pork-derived ingredient was actually INSIDE of the vitamin itself.

I made sure that I got my new pills from a healthfood store in the vegetarian section (these, by the way, did not make me sick).

So please be sure to check for yourselves.
And truly with Allah lies all success.  Wa salawaatu wa salaamu 'alaa Muhammadan.
