As Salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu!

I often find discrepancies in prayer calendars both on-line and actual calendars with the Salaawat times on them.  Where I live, I can't distinguish between the white thread of dawn and the black thread of night because 1) I live in a light polluted area and 2) I live in a low-rise apartment and there are buildings around me blocking my view of the horizon.

I'd like to know (for fasting purposes and for purposes of praying on time), what should I do in this situation and is it permissible to use one of the on-line prayer calculators?

Some of on-line calculators use different methods of calculating the salaawat (such as Muslim World League, Egyptian General Authority of Survey, University Of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, Umm Al-Qura and ISNA) and I don't know which one I could use here on the East Coast of the US, if it is in fact permissible to rely on these calculators.

If someone of knowledge could help with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Jazakum Allahu Khyran wa Barak Allahu Feekum!

Umm Abdul-Malik Naadira bint Henry

Salaam 'alaykum,

Please also add this with the question.

In my area, it is covered with trees, so the light from the horizon is concealed and the light is not perceived until it rises above the trees. Would the tree line be considered as the horizon or the earth? How do you determine fajr when it is like this? Jazakum Allaahu khair.

Was Salaam 'alaykum,

Abu Muhammad Hasan Grooms

Additionally, if the on-line calculations are permissible, which juristic method should be used?  The on-line calculators that I've seen use Shaf'i and Hanafi.

Jazakum Allahu Khyran Katheeran!
