From Sharh Massil ul Jaahiliyah of Shiakh ul Islaam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhaab by the noble Shaikh Saleh al-Fawzaan

As for ?al-Jaahiliyyah?, then it is an ascription to ignorance, which is the absence of knowledge. And Jaahiliyyah is a the name given to a period of time in which there was no Prophet or Book. And intended meaning here is the period of time before the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  was sent. He, the Most High, said,

?And do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance (jaahilyyah)??
[Al-Ahzaab : 33]

Meaning the period of time before the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  was sent, since before he (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  was sent, the whole world was drowned in misguidance, disbelief and heresy due to the fact that the previous messages had been corrupted. The Jews had changed their Book, the Taurat, and entered many aspects of disbelief, misguidance and repulsive slanders into it.

Similarly the Christians changed their Book, the Injeel, from that which was in it during its revelation to the Maseeh (alaihi salaam). And this occurred due to a man called Bals or Shawil, who used to be a Jew and hated Isaa (alaihi salaam). So he resorted to plotting and deception in corrupting the deen of al-Maseeh, whereby he manifested belief in the Messiah and showed repentance for the enmity towards al-Maseeh which he used to be upon. And he claimed that he saw a vision, which led him to believe in al-Maseeh. And the Christians believed him in that which he said. Then he took the Injeel which Allaah had revealed to Isaa and entered into it aspects of idolatry, shirk and disbelief, whereby he introduced the belief of trinity i.e. Allaah is the third of the three or Isaa is the son of Allaah or he is Allaah himself. And he entered into it the command to worship the cross and introduced hideous aspects of disbelief. They (the Christians) believed him in all of this, thinking that he was a scholar and a believer and they nicknamed him ?messenger Bals? i.e. the messenger of the Massiah, as per their claim. Rather his intent was to corrupt the deen of the Maseeh, and he achieved that which he desired and corrupted the deen of al-Maseeh and entered into it idolatry, belief in the trinity and the belief that Isaa was the son of Allaah, the third of three and he introduced many aspects of idolatry, so the Christians followed him in that.

This was the state of the people before the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  except a small group who had remained upon the correct religion. However most people were upon disbelief and deviation from the deen of Islam.

As for the Arabs, then they were of two groups. A group which followed the previous religion like Judaism, Christianity and Magianism. And a group upon Haneefeeyah, the deen of Ibraheem and Isma'eel, particularly in the Hijaz, in the land of Makkah al- Mukarramah. Up until there appeared amongst them a man called Amr bin Luhai al- Khazaa?ee. He was a ruler of  Hijaz and used to perform rituals, worship and (apparent) righteousness. Once he traveled to Shaam for treatment and found its people worshipping idols and which he thought was something good and so he returned from Shaam with some idols.  Then he searched for the idols which were buried under the earth after the people of Nuh - Wad, Sawaa, Yaguth, Ya'ooq and Nasr and others. A flood had destroyed and buried them. Then Shaitaan came and directed them to the locations of these idols. So he (Amr) dug them up, took them out and distributed them amongst the tribes of the Arabs and ordered that they be worshipped. And the Arabs accepted this and thus shirk entered the land of Hijaz and other Arab lands, and the deen of Ibraheem (alaihi salaam) was changed and he (Amr) started the practice of setting free she-camels in the names of idols thus the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam)  saw him dragging his intestines in the Hell-Fire. (al-Bukhaaree no.3521, Muslim no.2856)

I have a question, concerning the individual 'Bals' or 'shawil', mentioned by Shakhul Islam.  Is this 'Bals', the 'Saul of Tarsus' ('Saint' Paul)?
