From the magnificent book ?Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah wa shai min fiqhihaa was fawaaidihaa? by the Noble Imaam, the Mujaddid, the Mujaahid, the Muhaddith Abu Abdur Rahmaan Muhammad Naasir ud-Deen al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah).

Hadeeth No.124, Page 242

quote:

The Sun and the Moon are in the Fire on the Day of Judgement.

From Abu Hurayrah from the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) who said, ?The sun and the moon will be distorted and rolled together in the Fire, on the Day of Judgement.?

Reported by Imaam at-Tahaawee in ?Mushkil ul-Aathaar? (1/66-67): Muhammad bin Khuzaymah reported to us, Mu?allaa bin Asad al-Ammee reported to us, Abdul Azeez bin al-Mukhtaar bin Abdullaah ad-Daanaaj said, ?I saw Abu Salamah bin Abdur Rahmaan sitting in the masjid during the time of Khaalid bin Abdullah bin Khaalid bin Aseed. So al-Hasan came and sat with him and they began to speak. Abu Salamah said, ?Abu Hurayrah narrated to us from the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) who said, ?and he mentioned the hadeeth?? So al-Hasan said, ?But what is their sin?? So he replied, ?Verily I narrated to you from the Messenger of Allaah!? So al-Hasan remained silent.

It is also reported by Ahmed in ?Masaail? of his son Saaleh (p. 61), and al-Baihaqee in the book ?al-Ba?ath wan-Nushoor? and similarly by al-Bazzaar, al-Ismaaeelee, al-Khataabee.

The Flag Carrier of the Sunnah of the best of creation (sallallaahualaihi wasallam), then discusses the different chains and reporters and then says,

quote:

The Meaning of the Hadeeth

The intent behind the hadeeth is not what occurred in the mind of al-Hasan al-Basree, which is that the sun and the moon are in the Fire being punished in it as a recompense for them. But no! For Allaah the Mighty and Majestic does not punish whoever obeys Him from His creation, and from are that the sun and the moon. As is indicated by the saying of Allaah, the Blessed, the Most High,

?See you not that whoever is in the heavens and earth, and the sun and the moon, and the stars and the mountains, and the trees and the beasts, and many of mankind prostrate themselves to Allaah. But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified.? (al-Hajj: 18)

So He, the Most High, mentioned that His punishment is deserving for whoever prostrated to other Him in this world, as was mentioned by at-Tahaawee. So based upon this their being thrown into the Fire, carries two possibilities:

The First: That they are from the fuel of the Fire, as  al-Ismaaeelee said, ?Placing them in the Fire does not necessitate punishment of them, since Allaah has angels, stones and other devices of punishment in the Fire and whatever else He wills; so that they can be a punishment for the people of the Fire, but they themselves are not punished.?

The Second: That they thrown into the Fire as a reproach for those who used to worship them.

Al-Khataabee said, ?The intent behind placing them in the Fire is not to punish them by that. Rather as a reproach for those who used to worship them in the dunyaa, so that they may know their worship of the sun and moon was false.?

I say: And this is closest to the wording of the hadeeth and it is supported by the hadeeth of Anas with Abu Ya?laa as mentioned in ?al-Fath? (6/214), ?So that those who worshipped them can see them.? But I did not find it in his (Abu Ya?laa?s) Musnad. And Allaah knows best.
