As Salaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh

I Just wanted to be sure about something since I noticed sometimes people dont give the correct titles to other people who have more knowledge then themselves.

Is Umm Abdir-Rahmaan Al-Athariyah a Talibtul Ilm or is she a Shaykhah?
Is Umm Abdillah bint Muqbil a Talibtul Ilm or is she a Shaykhah?

The only reason Im questioning this is because I have heard people call them both but I wanted to be sure Insha Allah

Barakallahu Feekum

the word shaykh is not something that explicitly gives a person status as a person of knowledge, ie. it is not synonymous with 'aalim (scholar).  The word shaykh is used for someone of age, an elder.

A true 'aalim will never cease to be a student of knowledge, and this is why you find 'ulamaa' affirming for themselves that they are "students of knowledge."

VERY IMPORTANT - please include the subject of the thread in the TITLE line as this makes us able to find the thread in the archives when we need to locate it.  "A question" or "Help me" or the likes makes it impossible to know the subject of the thread, whereas, "a question about the terms, shaykh, 'aalim, taalib 'ilm, and the likes" is extremely helpful, may Allaah increase you in goodness!

Barakallahu Feekum for the explination and the sdvice that you gave.  That was my first time ever posting a messege but Insha Allah I will know for the next.

However, I am still confused as to what the "Status" is of Umm Abdir-Rahmaan Al-Athariyah and Umm Abdillah bint Muqbil.

According to your deffinition I know that Umm Abdillah bint Muqbil can't be a shaykhah cause she is still young.  I dont know the age of Umm Abdir-Rahmaan Al-Athariyah.

One of the reasons Im asking what they are is because I often see sisters putting them on a scholars level or they see them as being in that level.  So I wanted to know if they are on this level or not.  Just to be sure.  Also is it acceptible to put them on that level if they are not at that level?  I am a bit confused as to all of the different levels of knowledge and how you determine which person is where.
