Muslim babies? MMR jabs have traces of pork

26-06-2003

By VICKY COLLINS

The Herald:

THOUSANDS of Muslim babies in Scotland have been injected with a
derivative of pork contained in a major child vaccine, The Herald can reveal.

One of the two triple measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines used
by GPs in Britain are made using porcine gelatin, which is forbidden in
Islam.

Public health officials in Glasgow admitted that they had only begun
informing parents in the last week.

Strict Muslims can only use medicines containing derivatives of pork in
a medical emergency when there is no other option.

Muslim leaders across Scotland reacted angrily to the revelation and
are demanding that Muslim parents must be warned about any medication
that may contain pork derivatives to allow them to make an informed
choice.

Habib Rauf, imam at the Glasgow Central Mosque, said: "I did not know
it contained porcine gelatin. I have a three-year-old child who was
recently given the MMR vaccine and if I had known about this I would not
have let my child have the vaccination."

Generally, patients never see the full ingredients list for vaccines,
although doctors will check if there are any medical conditions that
lead to side- effects.

The vaccine with gelatin which is used widely in Britain is made by
Aventis Pasteur, while Merck makes another vaccine containing porcine
gelatin which is used widely across the world, but not in the UK. Another
vaccine used in the UK is made by Priorix and is free of the material.
However, usage of either one depends on availability.

Between them, Aventis Pasteur and Merck have offices in 41 countries
across the world, including Arab nations such as Egypt, the Gulf and
Saudi Arabia, as well as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim
nation.

A spokesman for Aventis Pasteur admitted the company was aware of the
possible implications of using such ingredients for religious groups.

He claimed it was "not a problem" because the gelatin was broken down
into peptides, and was therefore refined and not pure gelatin. He
confirmed there was no vegetarian option. He declined to comment on when the company first began using porcine gelatin in MMR. Merck was unavailable for comment.

However, Muslims said the ingredient still would be a concern because
it was sourced from pig, and said an alternative to porcine gelatin,
such as agar, should be used, or a warning given to all parents who were
considering the jab for their child.

Mohammad Faroghul Quadri, imam at the Khazra Mosque, Glasgow, said:
"The gelatin may be broken down, but those ingredients still come from
pork originally. This gelatin from pork is totally illegal under Islamic
law."

Mohammed Sarwar, Labour MP for Glasgow Govan, said: "I am sure if it is
the case that MMR contains pork gelatin then that would be a concern
for the Muslim community."

Unlike Muslims, Jews are only forbidden to eat pork, and have no
concerns about its use in medicines, according to Judith Tankel, who sits on
the committee of the Glasgow Council of Christians and Jews.

She said: "There is no problem with us wearing shoes or clothes made
using pigs and certainly injections or medicine containing derivatives of
pig are no problem."

Dr Syed Ahmed, immunisation co-ordinator for Greater Glasgow NHS, said
he had been alerted to the problem by a Muslim GP and had contacted all
GPs in Glasgow asking them to warn Muslim parents and offer the option
of using the alternative MMR vaccine made by Priorix.

Strict Muslims are only allowed to eat foods not expressly forbidden in
the Koran and animals slaughtered "in the name of Allah" are considered
halal, or lawful, to eat.

The Koran says only animals which chew the cud and have cloven hooves
can be eaten, and as pigs do not chew the cud they are considered haram,
or forbidden.

Although Jews also consider pork to be unclean, kosher law only covers
animal products which are eaten.

[Admins note: May allaah reward the sister for bringing this matter to our attention. Just a quick point to note that the people quoted in the article, a local imaam, and M. Sarwar (Labour MP!) are not people qualified to issue verdicts. This is not to pass judgement upon the view that they expressed, it being wrong or right, but merely to reinforce the fact that it is from our manhaj to refer matters to Ahl ul-'Ilm, and to receive qualified  answers based upon the usool of this religion so that the verdicts we take in our affairs can be trusted and depended upon with the knowledge that they have come through proper and trusted channels. So if anyone is able, maybe they can take this issue to the scholars to get a qualified answer that can be relied upon by all.]

Assalaamu'alaykum

A question for someone with knowledge:  Is something broken down to the molecular level still considered najis, or haraam for ingestion or injection?

Walaikum Salaam Brothers and Sisters,

This is nothing new...many of the vaccines contain haram ingredients.
Did you know there is a vaccination made from various parts of the monkey??

At the very least, if the ingredients are not haram, they are dangerous.
However, I do understand that parents' decision to vaccinate their
children is a personal one.  Those who do vaccinate either do it because
they are told their children can't attend school with vaccinations; they
do it just because they consider it part of regular health care for
children; they are not aware of the dangers; or they consider it the
lesser of two evils.

FYI, insulin is also made with ingredients that are derived from pork.

As-salaamu Alaikum

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.  Alhamdulillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen. Wa salaatu wa salaamu 'alaa ashrafil ambiyaa-e wal mursaleen, Muhammadan wa 'alaa aalihe wa as-haabihe ajma'een.

As-salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

I just wanted to acknowledge that this post may come as a surprise to many of you.  It may be your first reaction to turn away from it because it contradicts the mainstream (or most promoted) veiw on vaccination.  I just want to implore you all to do your research.  Our children are a trust and we have to do our best to keep them safe.

I know frist hand some of the reactions that (muslim)people have when first introduced to this subject.  They can be very harsh and closed, understandablely so.  This is something that sounds strange and new, but that does not mean it is without supporting evidences.

So PLEASE INFORM YOURSELVES BEFORE LETTING SOMEONE VACCINATE YOUR CHILD.
After you have researched and made a decision about whether the risks are greater or the benefits, then you can make your choice.

That said,
I have been doing research into this subject for a long time and I have discovered that there is a real risk of SERIOUS side-effects from these immunizations.

I would recommend the book
"VACCINES:   ARE THEY REALLY SAFE AND EFFECTIVE?  A PARENT'S GUIDE TO CHILDHOOD SHOTS"  By Neil Z. Miller.  Published by: New Atlantean Press

This book gives a good fundamental understanding of the concern/arguement of those who have been speaking out against these mass immunization programs.  It's just a start but it should help some, Insha'Allaah.

I don't know if any of the students of knowledge are informed about this topic, but I implore you brothers that have contact with the 'ulamaa to present to them this issue.  It is necessary that the scholars (raheemahumullaah)be presented with all of the facts so that they can benefit us with a response.

IF ANY OF THE BROTHERS ARE WILLING AND ABLE TO SACRIFICE SOME OF THEIR TIME FOR THIS CAUSE, I AM WILLING TO PRESENT THEM WITH THE INFO I HAVE ACQUIRED FROM MY RESEARCH.

I WOULD ALSO REQUEST THAT THE BROTHERS AND SISTERS WHO HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THIS TOPIC TO BE PREPARED TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO THE STUDENTS OF KNOWLEDGE IF ANY OF THEM ARE WILLING TO TAKE UP THIS TASK.  THIS WILL MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM, INSHA'ALLAAH.
May Allaah guide us and help us to arrive at the most beneficial answer. and help us to keep the trust (our bodies and the lives and bodies of our children) that we have been entrusted with.

Your Sister in Islaam
Umm Aasiyah Inshirah bint Umar

raised.
Jazakillahu khairun for the information and links posted above.
Questions
1.To any salafi doctors/medical experts on this forum. Does MMR contain traces of pork/ derived gelatin ?
2.To talib al ilm who can ask the ulemah. It is permissible to give this injection if it contains pork / derivatives?
3.To doctors : There are two options of vaccination, to give one MMR injection (at the GPs) with a suggested link to autism (allahu allam) or three seperate injections (at private doctors).
Which option is advised? Do the different injections contain different ingredients?
Many parent/s are having to make this decision. Please shed knowledge on this subject. Please knowledge based answers. Jazak Allahu khairun.

....just to add, I have read up that the effects of a child getting measles, mumps and rubella are just as dangerous. We want to take the means to protect our child/children but wish to make informed decisions, based upon knowledge, established facts, in ways that are permissible.
We ask Allah that He protects our children. Ameen.

bissmillahi ar rahmani ar rahim

assalam alaykoum

there is the answer of Shaykh al 'Outheymin, about the following qst: what is the houkm of gelatin made from lahm al baqarah (bovine meat)?

*pls, if anyone could put the arabic original here, this would be great*

I know this has no direct link tou your question, but by reading this you will figure out why i posted this thread inshaAllah.

He says in baab liqaa-i al maftouh that fil assl, the meat which was not slaughtered according to the shari'a is harraam, also even if a moulsim did not say the word bissmillah over it, you cannot eat it.
Then he speaks about a food that has in its content an ingredient which is haraam; he says that if you find a trace of it (athaar), or its color, or its smell (of this haraam ingredient) , than you cannot eat it, the whole food is not halal.
but if you cannot find anymore of the haraam ingredient, it has no trace, nor any color,etc..., then the whole ingredient is halaal.
He takes as a daleel for this that the sahaba radi 'Allahou 'anhoum, they used to eat (kaanou ya-kouloona, so this verb shows it was something they used to do)joubn  from the majoos ( moushrikin who worship the fire), and in the joubn, one knows one must put some "présure" (in french only i have the word, sorry, it is an ingredient taken from animal meat to make the joubn become joubn...); so, knowing it was joubn from the majoos, whose slaughters are haraam (as they are moushrikin), they used to eat it anyway.
it contend an harram ingredient who had lost all the caracteristics told by ash shaykh al Outheymin rahimahou llah.

i am quoting this fatwa so that you are aware of not making always houkm about foods which have in their content haraam ingredients, without asking 1st the 'ulama who have the fiqh fi deen, and not us.
as for pork beeing in the content of a vaccin, one, at the light of this fatwa, should think that he must ask the 'ulama, and not make private fatawas and warnings, inshaAllah ta'ala.

i give you the source of the fatwa:

"liqaa baab al maftouh 41-50" ( i assume those numbers must be the chapters)
ma'a fadilat ash shaikh Saalih al 'Outheymin
i'daad ad doktor Mohammad ibn Ahmad at Tayaar

the publication house is "daar al watan".
( i will give you as soon as i can the number of the qst inshaAllah).

" al haqqou min rabbikoum" (Ali 'Imran).
