wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

Allaah Most High says:

وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلَادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِ لِمَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُتِمَّ الرَّضَاعَةَ

"Mothers shall breastfeed their children for two full years, for those who want to complete (the entire period of) breastfeeding"

[Soorah Al-Baqarah:233]

Is there breastfeeding after two years?

It has been narrated that Ibn 'Umar and Ibn 'Abbaas said, "There is no breastfeeding after two years." [Tafseer At-Tabaree #4970, al-Kutub al-'ilmiyyah]  Also, Ibn 'Abbaas was reported to have said, "There is no breastfeeding except in these two years." [Tabaree #4967]

*** CLARIFICATION: These narrations negating the act of breastfeeding after two years (from Ibn 'Abbaas and Ibn 'Umar) mean: There is no breastfeeding that causes the child to have a relationship with the woman who breastfed him/her after two years.  This is understood from what has been reported from them in other narrations, like:

"We do not believe that breastfeeding after two years of age makes anything haraam." [Tabaree #4959]

Their statements should not be understood as a prohibition of breastfeeding after two years. ***

Can a child be breastfed for less than two years?

At-Tabaree also said that some of the scholars have said that the first part of the aayah, "Mothers shall breastfeed their children for two full years," made two years of breastfeeding obligatory on the mothers of the children.  Then Allaah lightened the affair with his statement, "for those who want to complete (the entire period of) breastfeeding."  Thus it is now up to the two parents to mutually decide if they want to wean the child early.  This was reported from Qataadah and Ar-Rabee'. [Tabaree 4967-4969]

And it was reported that Ibn 'Abbaas said that the order was actually lightened by the later part of the same aayah:

فَإِنْ أَرَادَا فِصَالًا عَنْ تَرَاضٍ مِنْهُمَا وَتَشَاوُرٍ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِمَا

"And if they (the parents) want to wean (the child) based upon mutual agreement and consultation, then there is no harm on (either of) them."

[Tabaree 4956]

Thirty months?

As for the thirty months, then that is including a minimal six month pregnancy, as referred to in Allaah's statement:

وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا

"And his (mankind's) being carried (in the womb) and being breastfed is 30 months"

[Soorah Al-Ahqaaf:15]

And Allaah knows best.
