Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaah.

I'm trying to understand the meaning of the term "al-Atharee"
I know that it has relation to the word "Athar" which I understand to mean narration, and "Aathaar" narrations.
So does "Atharee" means a person of narration?
How does this differ from the meaning of Ahlul-Hadeeth?
What's the difference between Athar and Hadeeth?
I've also heard that al-Atharee means one who sticks to the old way (i.e. the way of the Salaf).
So could some of the brothers please clarify this for me.

Jazakallaah khair.
Aslam
