As-Salaamu' Alaikum Jami'aan As-Salafiyoon. The question was raised from amongst our salafi brothers here in Columbus seeking baseerah. Is there any hadeeth for or against female circumcision?

As Salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu; I would like to know what exactly entails female circumcision, from the Sunnah. For the males, we know that it is removal of the foreskin. However, for the females what is it? In my travels, I have learned that this practice is wide spread in West Africa, where for the most part, they remove the clitoris (totally) of the female sometimes at birth and at other times when they reach puberty. If you dare to speak against their implementation of this circumcision (removal of the clitoris) you are libel to get into SERIOUS confrontation. The reason that most of them give is that contrary to the Sunnah, they say that removal of the clitoris curbs the women's sexual desires. So, if anyone has some clarity of female circumcision it would be of great benefit. As Salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu Abdul Basir al-Yardi

ÈÓã Çááå ÇáÑÍãä ÇáÑÍíã Wa alaikum assalaamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh. Al-Albaani mentioned a narration in as-silsilah assaheehah #722 about how a girls circumcision should be performed: Umm Atiyyah ? radhiyallaahu anhaa ? was a girl's circumciser in Madinah, so the Prophet ? sallalaahu alaihi wa sallam ?told her: ÅÐÇ ÎÝÖÊ ÝÃÔãøí æ áÇ Êäåßí ÝÅäå ÃÓÑì ááæÌå æ ÃÍÙì ÚäÏ ÇáÈÚá "When you circumcise, leave a little bit, and don't remove (the clitoris) completly, for verily, that makes the face more beautiful and is more pleasing to the husband." I was reported by Abu Dawood and Al-Haakim and Al-Khateeb in Tareekh Baghdaad and others with various narrations, and the Sheikh declared it saheeh because of its many chains of narration. Sheikh Al-Albaani has also mentioned in some of his tapes that all girls do not need to be circumcised, rather it depends on the size of the clitoris which varies among different races. Unfortunately, I do not remember the number of that tape. Circumcision of girls is practiced widely in the Arab world (including Saudi)in a more moderate fashion than in Africa. Many of the woman doctors in these areas know how to perform it properly. Wallahu A'lam.
