Assalaamu alaykum,

When we write letters we know for certain that it was the practice of the prophet sallaallaahu alayhi wassalam to start with

In the name of Allaah......

then

Peace be upon ........

so thats why we do the same but why do we always end with

wa alaykumus salaam.....?

I'm starting to think this is strange because no one has given us a greeting so why are we saying ' wa alaykumus sal.....?

Anyone who can enlighten me on this issue would benefit the whole ummah!

As Salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatu
MaashaaaAllah, sister, that is a good question.  I always wondered that myself although I never took up the practice of doing it.  I always ended my letters with As Salaamu alaikum.  It would be very enlightening to get some type of evidence for this practice.

In the authentic hadeeth of Jaabir ibn Sulaym in the Sunan of Abee Daawood, the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) prohibited Jaabir from initiating the salaams saying, "'alaykas-Salaam".  He (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) called it the greetings for the deceased.

Bismillaah innal hamdulillaah was salaatu was salaamu 'ala Rasoolillaah wa ba'd-

as salaamu 'alayki wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh-

I could be wrong but it seems (and I think this is what bro. Moosa meant) that the hadeeth is saying not to begin salaams without adding the 'wa' first.

However, I understand your initial question and it doesn't seem that this particular hadeeth answered your question. I don't know if the people have proof for why they conclude their letters that way. Personally, I write "was salaamu 'alaykum". Therefore I begin initiating the salaams and I also end initiating the salaams. And Allaah knows best.

was salaamu 'alayki,
ummu `isa

"ya hayyu ya qayyum bi rahmatika astagheethu aslihli shanee kullahu wa la takilnee ilaa nafsee tarfata `ayn."

assalaamu alaykum,

i have diffently noticed that a lot of brothers are not starting their posts with 'salaams', maybe there is a reason behind this! or it could be that they are just being careful!

Allaau aalim

i know i'm getting didgy!
