i thought i remember reading something on this topic recently but I couldn't find the thread.  anyway, here is a short Q&A from Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan (may Allaah preserve him) about the impermissibility of mentioning sins committed in the past when giving da'wah...

asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

can you or anyone else please clarify this ruling further...

i am asking because in some of the biographies of the companions, we read
about or sometimes we even listen to lectures about their pasts in
jaahiliyyah and how they were, and how they were then guided by Allaah to
take islaam.

for instance, i found this hadeeth in saheeh albukhaari:

"Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar:

I never heard 'Umar saying about something that he thought it would be so-
and-so, but he was quite right. Once, while 'Umar was sitting, a handsome
man passed by him, 'Umar said, "If I am not wrong, this person is still on
his religion of the pre-lslamic period of ignorance or he was their
foreteller. Call the man to me." When the man was called to him, he told
him of his thought. The man said, "I have never seen such a day on which a
Muslim is faced with such an accusation." 'Umar said, "I am determined that
you should tell me the truth." He said, "I was a foreteller in the pre-
lslamic period of ignorance." Then 'Umar said, "Tell me the most
astonishing thing your female Jinn has told you of." He said, "One-day
while I was in the market..."

to the end of the hadeeth.

i guess there is a difference here, in that the hadeeth is not related to
giving da'wah...

barakAllahu feekum

Sheikh Abdur Razaq Ibn Abdul Muhsin Al Abbad answers to a similar question:

......As it relates to sharing his story being a means of publicizing his sins, this is not the case, rather he should not speak about what he did in the past with much detail, nor should he speak about it in a manner of glorification. We have books which contain the biographies of the salaf, some detailing who and what they were prior to Islam. So how did we get this information except that they exposed some of it, as a means of education not as a means of entertainment and glorification. One vivid example of this is the story of one of the salaf by the name of Fudhayl Ibn Iyaadh (Rahimahullah) who was on his way to commit zina (i.e. fornication) with a woman and in the process of climbing the wall to her house for this purpose, he heard some of the Muslims performing salat, and he heard the verse:

Has not the time come that the hearts of the believers tremble with fear for the remembrance of Allah and what He has revealed of the Haqq (i.e. truth)ýý

And he said: ýYes indeed! Here I am about to fornicate with someoneýs daughter and the Muslims are there performing prayer to get closer to Allah!ý He abandoned this act and later became one of the most influential and renowned scholars of his time may Allah have mercy on him. And we find this profound story in books like Imam Ath Thahabiýs Seeyer Aýalam An Nubalaaý and other books which concentrate on compiling the biographies of the salaf and Allah knows best.

In The Name of Allah The Merciful, The Bestower of His Mercy

2 weeks ago (May 11, 2009) Sheikh Saleh al Fowzan was asked the following question during the question and answer session at the end of his Tafsir class in Riyadh:

Question: In our country America there are some individuals who used to sing/rap and they have now become Muslim. These individuals have begun to give lectures for the purpose of calling the youth to Islam and advising them to abandon disbelief, but at times they (ex-rappers/singers) mention in their lectures some of the sins that they used to commit in the past. Is this action correct?

Answer: This is not correct. As for them giving da'wah and calling people to Islam, this is good. But as for them mentioning their past sins, this is not befitting. What is correct is that they seek forgiveness and abandon mentioning of those sins except within themselves. They mention their sins within themselves for the purpose of regret and seeking forgiveness. Also, mention of one's past sins to an audience can possibly lead the listeners to fall into the same sins.
