In the name of Allah the Most Beneficent Most Merciful,

1470: On the authority of Abi Hurayrah -may Allah be pleased with him- he said: The Messenger of Allah -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- said: May the slave of the Dinar, Dirham and cloak bordered with silk be destroyed! If he is given then he's pleased and if he isn't he's disappointed. Bukhaari (2886)

Ash-Sheikh Saalih Al-Fouzaan -may Allah preserve him- says in his explanation of this hadeeth in Tasheel al-Imaam bifiqhi Lil Ahaadith min Buloogh il- Maraam Kitaab al-Jaami': Baab Az-Zuhd wal Wara'  [vol.6 Pg:207-208 1427/2006] (his explanation of Buloogh al- Maraam ):

This hadeeth is referring to the seeker of the Dunya. The one who only seeks after the Dunya and doesn't strive for the Hereafter. All his ambitions are for the Dunya and the affairs of his Deen are not important to him, the only thing that concerns him are Dunya matters.

So if he is given something from the Dunya he is pleased with Allah the Mighty and Majestic and if he isn't given then he becomes angry with Allah and the people (and Allah's refuge is sought).

(Ta'isah) means to be destroyed. The word At-Ta'is means destruction and failure. As Allah the Most High says: But those who disbelieve, for them is Ta'san ....(47:8) Meaning: destruction is for them, it is a supplication upon them for disaster.

Why did the Messenger -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- name him a 'Abd (Slave)? Because he has attached his heart to the Worldly Life, thusly the Dunya became as though it is his Lord (and he is it's slave). He devoted his heart to it and as a result of that he became enslaved to it just as the Poet says:

"I obeyed my desires and so they enslaved me,

And if I would of been satisfied (with what I possessed) I would've been free"

So this man, all of his interests are the Dunya, if he is given a portion therefrom he is content and he Madaha (commends Allah however without love and exhortation)* and if he isn't given anything then he is annoyed and enraged. Just as Allah Glorified be He Most High said about the Hypocrites: And from them are those who accuse you (O Muhammad -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam-) in the matter of the distribution of the alms. If they are given part thereof they are pleased, but if they are not given therefrom, behold! They are enraged!(9:58)

So their pleasure and displeasure is connected with what they recieve from worldy possessions. A person who is pleased and angered because of possessions (Dunya affairs) is a Hypocrite, Slave of the Dinar and the Dirham! Allah the Most High says: And only if they were contented with what Allah and His Messenger -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- gave them and said: "Allah is sufficient for us. Allah will give us from His bounty, and also His Messenger (from alms, etc). We implore Allah (to enrich us)."(9:59)

Therefore in this (Prophetic narration) is debasement and ridicule for having greed for the Worldly Life and that a person should not place his pleasure and anger according to it rather he should place his pleasure and anger solely for his religion and for Allah 'azza wa jall. As for the Dunya if he recieves something from it he takes it and if he isn't given he says: "Allah is sufficient for me and He will bestow upon me from His bounty."

The Prophet -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- used to when he would distribute the alms give those who were weak in Eemaan and the Hypocrites more than others and He -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- wouldn't give the Virtuous Companions anything, He -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- would entrust them to their religion because (He -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam- knew) that they wouldn't become enraged and upset due to not recieving anything because of thier firm belief.

As for those who had weak belief, the Messenger -sallahu 'alayhi wasallam-feared they would relapse and (leave the Religion of Islaam) so He gave them what He gave them unifying and bringing their hearts together.

So, (found) in this is piety; and that which is incumbent upon a individual is that he doesn't attach himself to the Dunya or get angered and pleased because of it. Instead he attaches himself to Allah.  As far as the Dunya goes, if he is given something lawful from it then he takes it and uses it to aid him upon the obeidience of Allah and if not then his religion and reliance upon Allah suffices him.

This is the distinction between the People of the Dunya and the People of the Deen. Lastly, in this hadeeth is incitement upon having Al-Wara' (Piety) and a warning from attachment of the hearts to the Dunya and its temptations.

*Faaidah: Ash-Sheikh Muhammad bin Saalih Al-'Uthaymeen -may Allah have mercy on him- says in his explanation of Surah al-Faatihah: " It is mandatory that Al-Hamd be stipulated with love and exhortation because the People of 'Ilm they say: "Just merely mentioning Him (Allah) with perfectness and completeness without love nor exhortation isn't considered Hamd rather it is Madh." (Tafseer Juz 'Amma by the Shiekh)

So this is why the Sheikh says "if he is given a portion therefrom he is content and he Madaha" instead of saying "Hamida" and Allah knows best.
