O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allâh, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought.

About three days ago while trying to read some posts on Salafitalk, I began hearing this familiar buzzing sound around my head and next to my ear.

You got it ! A pesty little 'musca domestics' or commonly known as the housefly ! I tried killing it, but it got away - as they sometimes do - then came right back. No wonder the Arabs call it 'dhubaab' (something you push away but continues to come back after being pushed).

Then finally, this familiar small (but can sometimes be quite large) nuisance that hangs around our homes with their filthy habits that lend to the spread of quite a few certain disease (for example cholera, poliomyelitis, anthrax and tuberculosis) was mine...bam...janazah time! I finally got him (or her).

I then began to think and reflect upon the many divine texts I had either read or heard from the People of Knowledge pertaining to this annoying, pesty creature and decided to share one of them with our salafitalk brothers and sisters, with the hope and expectation that some of the students of knowledge here would present some of the fawaa'id (benefits) that are derived from their related stories.

And if someone wanted to add some more 'fly text' from the Book of Allaah, the Authentic Sunnah or from the statements of the Ulamaa - past or present - they may do so.

From Taariq ibn Shihaab*: That the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam said:

"A man entered Paradise because of a fly and (another) man entered Hell-fire because of a fly. [So] they the Companions) said: "How could that be O Messenger of Allaah?" He replied: "Two men passed by a people (perhaps from the Banoo Israa'eel) and they had a sanam**, and no one was allowed to continue on (through the town) until and unless they made a sacrifice of something to the sanam. So they (the towns people) said to one of the two men: " Offer a sacrifice!" So the man said: "I don't have anything to make a sacrifice (to this sanam) with". They said: "Make a sacrifice (no matter what the size of it) even if it is a fly!" So the man sacrificed a fly and they left him (alone to go on his way) and he (as a result of that sacrifice of the fly to the sanam) entered the Hell-fire. They then said to the other man: "Sacrifice (something no matter what is the size of it)!" So the man said: "I am not one who sacrifices to anyone or thing other than Allaah, the Mighty, the Majestic!" So they killed him and he entered into the Paradise".

In Kitaabut Tawheed it says that this narration was related by al-Imaam Ahmad but as Ibnul Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said: "Perhaps al-Imaam Ahmad related it in Kitaabuz Zuhd or other than it". It is also found related by Aboo Nu'aym in al-Hilyah volume one, pages 261-262 # 646.

I say (Aboo Tasneem) that it appears in az-Zuhd narrated by Sulaymaan, but what is correct is Salmaan. It also seems as though it did not come marfoo'an, that is, from the Prophet himself, alaihis salaatu was salaam, but rather mawqoofan, from a companion, and in this case Salmaan al-Faarisee, radiyallaahu anhu.

I now await for some beneficial comments from the students among this blessed forum - may Allaah bless their administrators and all those who made it possible - from what they have heard or read (from the People of Knowledge or their students) pertaining to this noble hadeeth!

And Allaah knows best and is the Most High!

*Taariq ibnu Shihaab al-Bajalee al-Ahmasee, Aboo Abdillaah saw the Prophet, but never heard anything from him. In the above narration he heard this from the companion, Salmaan al-Faraasee, radiyallaahu anhummaa.

**Sanam (pl. asnaam) and wathan (pl. awthaan) or two  words which mean 'an idol'. If they are mentioned together, then sanam is that which is worshiped with a shape or form and a wathan is that which does not have a shape or form. But if they are mentioned singularly, that is, by themselves seperately, then a sanam is a wathan and a wathan is a sanam.

From Sahih Al-Bukhari " The Book of Medicine."
If a housefly falls in a utensil.

Narrated Abu Huraira (radi allahu anhu) Allah's Messenger( salallahu alaiwasalam) said, " If a fly falls in the vessel of any of you, let him dip all of it (into the vessel) and then throw it away, for in one of its wings there is a disease and in the other there is a healing(antidote for it), ie.,the treatment for that disease."
