Q: What is the ruling on reciting the Qur'an from a Mus-haf (Arabic Qur'an) during Tarawih (special supererogatory night Prayer in Ramadan)? Fatwa no.  579

A: The scholars have differed over the ruling on this matter; some of them disliked it while the majority permitted it. In the books: "Qiyam-ul-Layl wa Qiyam Ramadan" by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Nasr Al-Marwazy, it is authentically reported on the authority of Ibn Abu Mulaykah that Dhakwan Abu `Amr, whom `A'ishah manumitted, used to lead her and those with her in Salah during Ramadan, and he recited from a Mus-haf. Ibn Shihab was asked about a man who led people in Tarawih in Ramadan and recited from a Mus-haf. He replied, "They have done so since the beginning of Islam. The best people among us used to recite from a Mus-haf."

It was also authentically reported from Ibrahim ibn Sa`d from his father that he used to tell him to lead his family in Salah (Prayer) in Ramadan, and he told him to recite from a Mus-haf saying, "Let me hear your voice." It was reported from Ayyub on the authority of Muhammad that he saw no harm in someone leading Tarawih and reciting from a Mus-haf. `Ata' said about a man who was leading Salah in Ramadan with a Mus-haf, that "There is no harm in it." And Yahya ibn Sa`id Al-Ansary said, "I do not see any harm in reciting from the Mus-haf in Ramadan when wanting to perform Qiyam (standing for optional Prayer at night)." Ibn Wahb (may Allah be merciful with him) said, "Malik (may Allah be merciful with him) was asked about the people in a village where no one had memorized the Qur'an, and if they could give a Mus-haf to a man from among them to recite from. He said, 'There is no harm in doing so.'"

In "Al-Muntaha" and its commentary it is written: "A person performing Salah may recite from a Mus-haf and look at it." Ahmad said, "There is no harm in someone leading people in Qiyam while looking at a Mus-haf." He was asked, "In the Faridah (obligatory Salah)?" He said, "I have not heard anything against it." Al-Zuhry was asked about a man who recited from the Mus-haf in Ramadan. He replied, "The best among us recite from the Mus-haf."

Among those who disapproved of it were Mujahid, Ibrahim, and Sufyan. They disapproved of someone leading people in Ramadan reciting from the Mus-haf, fearing that they may be imitating the People of the Book. Muhammad ibn Nasr said in "Qiyam-ul-Layl wa Qiyam Ramadan", and "Al-Witr" that a group of people disapproved of this, because it was what the People of the Book used to do, so they disapproved of Muslims imitating this. Muhammad ibn Nasr responded to this claim of imitating them by saying that reciting from the Qur'an is far different from reading the mentioned Books, because reciting the Qur'an is one of the acts of Salah, while reading their Books is not.

Reciting from the Mus-haf in Tarawih
The first question of Fatwa no. ( 2238 )

Q 1: During the blessed month of Ramadan, we performed Tarawih (special supererogatory night Prayer in Ramadan) in the American city Fresno, but there was an argument regarding the recitation from the Mus-haf (Arabic copy of the Qur'an) as some of our Muslim brothers said that it is impermissible to recite from the Mus-haf in Tarawih. While others said that it is permissible, because none amongst the brothers here has memorized the whole Qur'an.

A: There is no harm that your Imam recites from the Mus-haf during Tarawih. Rather, it is Mandub (commendable) in your case, for it is desirable to prolong in the recitation for Tarawih, and this can not be achieved, in your case, unless your Imam recites from the Mus-haf. It was narrated by Abu Dawud in the chapter on [Masahif] on the authority of Abu Ayyub on the authority of Ibn Abu Malikah that `Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to pray behind her slave Dhakwan using a Mus-haf for reciting.

Ibn Abu Shaybah also said: Waki` told us on the authority of Hisham Ibn `Urwah on the authority of Ibn Abu Mulaikah from `Aishah that she told that a slave of hers, that he would be free after her death, used to lead her in Salah (prayer) during Ramadan reciting from the Mus-haf. This Hadith was also narrated by Al-Bukhari in the Sahih and was ranked as Mu`allaq (a Hadith missing link in the chain of narration, reported directly from the Prophet) but it is Majzum (verified).

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Reciting Qur'an from the Mus-haf during the Tarawih

Q 4: There is a Masjid (mosque) next to our house, where the Imam, who is not a memorizer of the Holy Qur'an, recites from a copy of the Qur'an in the Tarawih Prayers. It is worth mentioning that he moves a lot while opening and turning the pages of the copy of the Holy Qur'an. What is your opinion on such a practice?

A: reciting from a copy of the Qur'an in the Tarawih Prayers is permissible if the Imam is not a memorizer of the Holy Qur'an, as it was authentically reported that some of the Salaf (Righteous predecessors) would do it.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!

Below are some fataawa from Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah

Question: What is the ruling regarding the one who holds and carries the Mushaf in the Taraweeh prayer?

Answer: I do not know an origin for this action; but what is apparent is that he should have humility and be at ease and not hold a Mushaf. Rather he should put his right hand on his left hand like in the Sunnah, placing his right hand on his left hand, the wrist and forearm and place them on his chest. This is the stronger opinion and better, while holding the Mushaf busies him from following this Sunnah.

Also, reviewing the Mushaf and the Ayaat may busy his heart and his eyesight from listening to the Imaam. So, what I see is leaving off this action is the Sunnah, and he should listen and remain quiet and he should not use a Mushaf. If he has knowledge then he can prompt the Imaam if he forgets or someone else can prompt him.

The letıs assume that the Imaam makes a mistake, and no one prompts him. This mistake has no harm in other than the recitation of al-Fatiha. This harm is specific to al-Fatiha, because al-Fatiha is a Rukn (pillar) which is most necessary. As for him leaving to recite some Ayaat in other than al-Fatiha, then this does not harm him, if there is no-one who is praying behind him to make him aware of the mistake.

If someone holds a Mushaf behind the Imaam due to necessity, then perhaps there is no problem with that. As for everyone to hold a Mushaf, then this is against the Sunnah.

Question: Some of those who pray behind the Imaam, follow the Imaam using a Mushaf while he is reciting. Is there a problem in doing that?

Answer: What is apparent to me is that this should not be done. It is more befitting to concentrate in the prayer and have khushoo, and place the hands on the chest reflecting upon what the Imaam is reciting. This is due to the saying of Allah Azza wa Jal:

{{ When the Qur'aan is being recited, then listen to it and remain silent, perhaps you will have mercy sent upon you }}

also the saying of Allah Subhaanu:

{{ Indeed the believers are successful. Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness. }}

Furthermore, due to the saying of the Prophet -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam:

ıMost certainly the Imaam has been made to be followed; so if he makes the Takbeer then you make the Takbeer, and if he recites then remain quiet.ı

Here is a fatwa from Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen rahimahullah

Question: Noble Shaykh was asked: What is the ruling of following the Imaam using a Mushaf in the prayer?

Answer: The Noble Shaykh answered by saying: Following the Imaam by using a Mushaf means that the praying person holds and reads a Mushaf to follow the Imaamıs recitation. If there is need for this, whereby the Imaam has a weak memory, and it is said to one of the people praying: 'Take a hold of the Mushaf and prompt me if I a mistake.ı Then there is no problem in doing this since there is a need for it.

As for it being in any other way; then I do not see it permissible for a person to follow the Imaam by reading the Mushaf; since he looses out on what is required and falls in to that which is disliked. He looses out by not looking at the place of sajood, and also by placing the hands on the chest which is from the Sunnah. He falls into that which is disliked as a result of the movement of holding the Mushaf, opening it, closing it, and placing it down, There is no need for all these movements.

The people of knowledge have said that it is Makrooh (disliked) to move in the prayer if there is not a need for it, because it negates the perfection of khusoo in the prayer, some of the scholars even said: that the movements of the eyes nullifies the prayer, because the eyes will follow the recitation from the beginning of the line to the end of the line, then from beginning of the second line to the end of the line, etc. Along with all this, there are many letters and many words, as such there would be a lot of movements for the eyes, and this nullifies the prayer.

So, my advice for my brothers is that they leave this matter and they return themselves to having khusoo without looking at Mushaf.ı
