Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

The people of Sunnah know the famous hadeeth by way of Aisha radiAllahu
'anha, that the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam never exceeded 11 raka'at
in the Night Prayer (Qiyaam al-layl).

However, there are a few narrations stating that sometimes 13 raka'at were
also prayed. Regarding one method of praying 13 raka'at, Sh. al-Albaani
rahimuhullah clarified that the first two raka'at were either the
superagatory raka'at offered after the Isha salat or two quick raka'at
performed to start the Qiyaam al-Layl. But still, there seem to be other
narrations in which the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did make 13
raka'at which were all part of Qiyaam al-Layl. So, I am looking for an
explanation for this...

Wa'alaykum aslaam Ukhtee!

I came across the following hadith and hope it will be helpful insha'allah:

Abu Salamah asked 'Aishah about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam). She said, "He performed thirteen rakahs (in the night prayer): he observed eight rakahs and would then observe Witr and then observe two rakahs sitting, and when he wanted to bow, he stood up and then bowed down, and then observed two rakahs in between the adhaan and iqaamah of the Dawn Prayer." (Related by Muslim)

From this hadith it should be noted that the TWO RAKAH read between the adhaan and iqaama of the dawn prayer are the SUNNAH of FAJAR. The two rakahs after the Witr prayer make it 13 rakahs.

Imaam Ibn Khuzaimaah is of the opinion that prayer after Witr is allowed to whoever wants to pray after it, and that the two rakahs which the Prophet (Sallallaahu'alaihi wa sallam) used to pray after Witr were not exclusively for him over his Ummah, for he has ordered us to pray two rakahs after Witr, an order of recommendation and preference, not one of obligation and compulsion.

It seems that the purpose of his command to make the last prayer at night odd was to prevent neglect of the one odd rakah, so this objective is not contradicted by thetwo rakahs after it, as established in his practise and his command. Allah knows best.

All info is taken from Shaikh Albanees- The prophets prayer described-appendix 7( The two rakahs after witr)
