Refutation of Abdur Rahman Abdul Khaliq, Abul Hasan Ma'aribi and others who claim that only the Innovators from the sects of Rafidah, Qadariyyah, Murjiah, Khawaarij and Jahmiyyah have to be boycotted.

Hadeeth No. 5118 - Narrated 'Abdullah bin Maghaffal: that he saw a man throwing stones with two fingers (at something) and said to him, "Do not throw stones, for Allah's Apostle has forbidden throwing stones, or he used to dislike it." 'Abdullah added: Throwing stones will neither hunt the game, nor kill (or hurt) an enemy, but it may break a tooth or gouge out an eye." Afterwards 'Abdullah once again saw the man throwing stones. He said to him, "I tell you that Allah's Apostle has forbidden or disliked the throwing the stones (in such a way), yet you are throwing stones! I shall not talk to you for such-and-such a period."

Imaam Ayyoob as-Sakhtiyaanee rahimahullah [d.131H], one of the great Scholars from the Tabi'een was called to wash someone who died, so he went out with the people, so when the face of the dead person was uncovered, he knew him. So he said: "See to your companion, for I will not wash him. I saw him walking with a person of bid'ah." (Al-Ibaanah #498)

quote:
Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade the Muslims to talk with three of us [companions] from amongst those who had stayed behind him [when he went to Tabuk].

The people began to avoid us and their attitude towards us underwent a change and it seemed as if the whole atmosphere had turned against us and it was in fact the same atmosphere of which I was fully aware and in which I had lived [for a fairly long time].

We spent fifty nights in this very state and my two friends confined themselves within their houses and spent [most of the] time in weeping, but as I was young and strong amongst them I got [out of my house], participated in congregational prayers, moved about in the bazaar; but none spoke to me.

I came to Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) as he sat amongst [people] after the prayer, greeted him and asked myself whether his lips stirred in response to my greetings.

Imam An-Nawawi said:

quote:
And know that in this hadeeth of Ka'b (radhiyallaahu 'anhu) there are many beneficial lessons...

The eleventh: the recommendation [meaning, it's mustahabb] of boycotting the people of innovation and open sin, and leaving off saying salaam to them, and cutting them off scornfully and rebukingly.

So are these people coming up with a newfangled jihadi concept that staying behind from jihad takes one out of Islam, and so the individual who stays behind should be boycotted?

Or are these people so ignorant about Islam that they haven't even read the two Sahihs?

Abdullah ibn Umar as-Sarkhusee - the scholar of al-Khazar said: "I ate a single meal with an innovator & Ibn al-Mubaarak(d 181H) heard of it so he said: "I will not speak to him for 30 days." sharh usool itiqaad Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah of Imam al-Lalika'ee.

Allamah Muqbil rahimahullah was asked: 'Is it permissible to attend the funerals of the innovators, if his innovation has not reached the level of disbelief?' So he replied: 'It is up to you to attend or not attend. However, that which is better is not to attend because it was not known from the Salaf, may Allah have mercy on them, that they attended the funerals of the innovators. Rather, Imaam Ahmed said: 'Between us and them are the funerals' i.e. they should not attend them.'

Here is an excerpt from a fatwa of the Permanent Committee of Scholars of Saudi Arabia quoting Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah,

"Therefore, it is not an act of Sunnah, according to the consensus of the Four Imams (Abu Hanifah, Malik, Al-Shafi'y, and Ahmad), to kiss or touch the corners of Al-Bayt (another name for the Ka'bah) which are beside Al-Hajar Al-Aswad or the walls of Al-Bayt, or Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim) or the Rock near Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (the Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem) or the grave of any of the prophets and righteous people. The scholars differed as to the ruling on putting the hand on the Mimbar of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when it existed. Malik held the view that it is Makruh (reprehensible), for it is Bid'ah (innovation in religion). It was reported that when Malik saw 'Ata' doing this, he did not attend his religious circles." (Majmoo' al-Fataawa 79/27)

'Alee ıRadhiAllaahu anhu- said: "No-one comes to me, preferring me over Abu Bakr and Umar ıRadhiAllaahu anhuma- except that I will lash him with the punishment of a slanderer."

Reference given is Al-Furqan baynal haq wa al-Batil p. 21-22 in the book 'The Life of the Greatest Man After the Prophets & Messengers: Abu Bakr as-Siddeeq' Compiled By Shaykh Muhammad al-Anjaree hafidhahullah. This extract is translated by Br. Abbas Abu Yahya hafidhahullah.

The following is from a post of Br. Abul Hasan Maalik hafidhahullah found here

With regards to the treatment of the people of desires one need only look at what Ameerul-Muımineen Umar Al-Faaruq ııı ıııı ııı   did with Sabeegh ibn Asl Al-Handhali from what is collected by Ad-Daarimi in his Sunan and other than him:
quote:
That Sabeegh Al-Iraqi began to ask about things in the Quran amongst the Muslims, so word of this reached Umar ibn Al-Khattaab. So when he came to Umar he said: ıYou are asking about things not known before. So he sent for some palm branches and beat him until he bled, then he left him until he recovered then beat him again, then left him again until he recovered then beat him again, then when he went to beat him again Sabeegh said: ıO leader of the believers if you want to kill me then do so quickly, but if you want to correct me then I swear by Allah that I free from that which was with me.ı So Umar allowed him to return to his land and wrote to Abu Musa Al-Ashıari that no one from the Muslims should sit with him.ı
And in the narration collected by Ibn Battah in Al-Ibaanah from Abu Uthman who said:
quote:
ıUmar wrote to us not to sit with him, and if we were a hundred in a gathering and he sat with us we would all stand and disperse from him.ı
Sheikh Ibraheem Ar-Ruhaili mentions in "ıııı ııı ııııı ı ııııııı ıı ııı ııııııı ı ııııı" ıThe Position of the people of the Sunnah and Jamaıah with the people of desires and innovationı (2/535) in the footnote of this narration:
quote:
ıUmar beat him because these questions of his were on the ıııııııı (unclear verses) of the Qurıan.ı
This is merely one example of the treatment of the Salaf for those who invented in the religion.

And here is a quote translated by Br. Moosaa Richardson in the same thread referenced above,
quote:
Al-Imaam Ibn Battah (d.387) said:

ııı ııııı ıııııı ıı ıı ııııı ıııı ııı ıııııı ııııııı ıııııı ıı, ıııııı ıı ııııı ııııı ııı ııı ıııııı ııı ııı ıııııı ıııı ıııı ııııı

"And it is from the Sunnah to stay away from anyone who believes in anything like what we have mentioned (innovations), and to boycott him, abhor him, boycott his allies and whoever aids him, defends, or befriends him, even if he is apparently upon the Sunnah."

This is from the book "The biography of Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal" (p. 48-49) English translation...

His son Salih reported something which confirms his shunning of the innovators, indeed, even those who had contact with them, although they were not innovators; he said: "Al Hazzami came to my father and he had gone over to bin Abi Dawood, so when he came out and saw him, he closed the door in his face and went back inside." (Tabaqat Al-Hanabilah, vol 1, p.250)

Abu Dawood As-Sijistani asked Ahmad bin Hanbal: "If i see a man from Ahlus-Sunnah with a man from among the innovators, should i stop talking to him?" He said: "No, on the contrary, you should inform him that the person with whom you saw him is an innovator, then if he stops speaking to him (all well and good), but if not, consider him to be with him (i.e. he an innovator also).

Abu Abdullaah Muhammad bin Ahmad bin Mufarraj said, "...if he(Imaam Ahmad bin Awn illaah {d.378H}) came across evil and witnessed any deviation from the Sunnah, he would oppose it and would disgrace and humiliate (its perpetrator), and he would announce the affair of this person and declare his own disownment of him by mentioning the evil of such a one in the various public gatherings, and he would incite others against him such that he either destroyed him or caused him to abandon his evil and repugnant madhhab and his evil doctrine. And he would never cease to remain upon this habit, making Jihaad therein, seeking the Face of Allaah, up until he met Allaah." (Taareekh Dimashq 5/118).[1]

Ibn Abee Haatim narrates from 'Abdul-'Azeez al-Uwaisee, who said, "When Ismaa'eel bin Abee Uwais went out towards Hussain bin Abdullaah bin Dhamairah, and this reached (Imaam) Maalik, he boycotted him for forty days, because he (Maalik) was not pleased with him (Hussain)." (al-Jarh wat-Ta'deel 1/21).[2]

And Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Haaroon al-Mawsilee said, "I asked Abu Abdullaah Ahmad bin Hanbal, "I am from the people of Mawsil and the majority of those in our town are Jahmiyyah. And the affair of al-Karaabeesee, "my recitation of the Qur'an is created" had appeared there." So he replied, "Beware of this Karaabeesee. Do not speak to him and do not speak to whoever speaks to him." (Taareekh Baghdaad 8/65).[3]

Ahmad bin Zaheer said, "I heard Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Yoonus say: Test the people of Mosul with Mu'aafi bin Imraan. If they love him then they are Ahl us-Sunnah, and if they hate him then they are Ahl ul-Bid'ah - just as the people of Koofah are to be tested with Yahyaa. (al-Laalikaa'ee 1/66).[4]

Al-Laalikaa'ee reports with his sanad to Sulaymaan bin Yasaar that a man from Banee Ghunaym who was called Subaygh bin 'Asal approached Madinah and he used to have books. So he began to ask about the mutashaabih (unclear) from the Qur'aan. This reached 'Umar, and so he went to him and had prepared for him some branches (tied together) from the date-palm tree. Then when he entered upon him, he said, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Abdullaah bin Subaygh". 'Umar said, "And I am 'Abdullaah (the Servant of Allaah), 'Umar". And then he got close to him and began to strike him with those combined branches, and he did not stop beating him until he broke his head open and blood was flowing upon his face. So he said, "Enough, O Ameer ul- Mu'mineen, for by Allaah, that which I found on my head has now gone". (no. 1137)[5]

Shaykh Rabee' ibn Haadi al-Madkhalee حفظه الله commented regarding this incident, "What did the rightly guided Khaleefah Umar bin al-Khattaab do with Subaygh? How many innovations and false principles did Subaygh have? The rightly guided Caliph combined in him four punishments: imprisonment, beating, negation and ordering his exile for a complete year until correct repentance is openly manifest."[6]

It has been reported in Durar As-Suniyyah (1/33) that the Imaam, the Mujaddid, Muhammad Bin Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah)(d.1206H) said:
quote:
I hold that the people of innovation are to be boycotted and their affair is to be made known until they repent.  I pass judgement against them based on what is apparent and I leave their secrets/hidden affairs to Allaah.  And I believe that every newly invented matter in the Religion is an innovation.

Regarding those who are overjoyed with the Sept. 11th attack, Shaikh Saalih as-Suhaymee said: "did you check with the Scholars before you rejoiced at these attacks, Fear Allaah and don't follow your emotions, do not give a bad impression of Islaam". The Shaykh also mentioned "Do not sit with those people."

Imaam Al-Baghawee (raheemahullaah) said:

"The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) has informed us that this ummah would divide into groups, and that desires and innovations would appear amongst them. And he (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) declared salvation for whosoever follows his Sunnah and the Sunnah of his companions may Allaah be pleased with them. So it is a must upon every Muslim, when he sees a man dispersing any type of vain desire or innovation knowingly, or he is scorning any part of the Sunnah, to abandon him and free himself of him, whether he is dead or alive. Thus, he does not greet him with Salaam when he encounters him nor does he respond to him if he is greeted initially. He is to continue doing this until that individual abandons his innovation and returns to the truth. As for the forbiddance of abandoning (i.e. making Hijrah from) oneآıs brother for more than three days [18], then that is in regards to a disagreement that occurs between two people in respect to matters of companionship or family ties. It is not in regards to the Religion, for indeed, abandoning the people of vain desires and innovations is unending, until they repent."{1}

One of Imaam Ahmad's companions used to sit with Al-Haarith Al-Muhaasibee frequently. Imaam Ahmad's companion said to him, "Al-Haarith is saying this and that, and he has humility in his worship, and he has great acts of worship..."

Ahmad said, "When does he visit you?"

He replied, "He visits me after Maghrib."

Imaam Ahmad said, "Then I will also come, but allow me to sit in a place where I can hear his talk but I do not see him nor does he see me. I want to hear his talk while he does not see me."

So Imaam Ahmad went and hid himself. After praying Maghrib, they sat down and their host brought food. Then they prayed 'Eshaa', returned to the house, and sat down again. They sat for a long time and Al-Haarith did not speak. Rather he sat in humility, in a way that fear, humbleness, and humility could be felt from him.

One of Al-Haarith's companions asked him something, and then he began to talk, using good manners and softening their hearts. He continued talking as some of his companions reached states of humility, and others began to weep.

The companion of Imaam Ahmad said, "Then I went to see Imaam Ahmad, and I found him crying. So I said, 'O Abaa 'Abdilllaah! What about this talk that you heard?' He replied, 'I have not heard any speech finer than this! However, do not sit with him!'"

He said, "I have not heard any speech finer than this! However, do not sit with him!" Why? Because this kind of speech had not been in accordance with the guidance of the people of the Sunnah who preceded them. He was coming with a new manner of speech and a new manner of humility that had not been known to the scholars, a new style that the people before them had not known. So due to this, Imaam Ahmad was afraid that, with these new things, if they would have continued sitting with them, they would have strayed toward some innovation.{2}
