Bismillah,

Assalaamu alaikum,

Just for further clarification i have posted an extract from my notes, from our class last year in which we covered the Sharh of The Three Fundamental Principles of Islaam (Thalaathatul-Usool), which was taught by the brother Hassan as-Somaali.  And in this extract, it is explaining the first ayah of Surah al-Asr:

"BY TIME..."

Allah (subhana wa ta?ala) is swearing by time, Allah is taking oath by time.  And in Arabic taking oath can be down with three letters and these letters are: Waw/ba/ta
And these letters are also known as the ?Huroof al-Jarr? (that which comes after ends with a kasrah eg. Wallahi/billahi).

So Allah (subhana wa ta?ala) when we see that He swears by something or takes oath by something from His creation then this is honouring this thing from the creation and also showing its greatness.

And the third thing is that, as for the creation, it is not permissible except that they swear by Allah or take oath by Allah (subhana wa ta?ala).  As we have in the hadeeth which Shaykh Al-Albaani and Shaykh Muqbil make authentic:
?Whoever takes oath by other than Allah then he has made Shirk with Allah or disbelieved.?

So it is not permissible for the creation to take oath by other than Allah.

And then somebody might come and say: ?Why is it permissible for Allah to swear by the Creation and it is not permissible for us to swear by the creation??

Then we reply to this person with the ayah of Allah (subhana wa ta?ala):
?Allah is not asked about what He does but they are asked.?

Wassalaamu alaikum

Sorry that my answer was so short and basic but I just took it for granted that this was a commonly known issue from the issues of aqeedah and tawheed. May Allaah increase the muslims in understanding their deen! اللهم آمين

As-Salaamu alaykoom:

If you look in the book Fatawa Al-Aqeeda by Shaykh Uthaymeen you will find a chapter called "swearing by the Mushaf".  This is my best attempt of a translation " Since the Mushaf is the kalaam of Allah ta'aala, and the words of Allah is from His attributes, then it is permissible to swear by the Mushaf."

Also in the chapter intitled "The ruling on swearing by other than Allah"  Shakyh Uthaymeen says, "There is no problem swearing by the Quran because Allah spoke it in actuality."

The students of knowledge in Egypt are saying that there is a difference of opinion regarding swearing by the Mushaf.  This is because some people may mean by it the printed manufactured book, between the binders.   But, there is no dispute that swearing by the Quran is permissible. And Allah knows best.

Abu Salmaan:

What Allah swears by may or may not be permissible for us to swear by.  As Allah swears by His creation in many places in the Quran.  For instance, "Wal asr" or "By time".  However swearing by the creation is only for Allah.  So His swearing is actually not a proof here.

Being as though the qur'an is not created, and is the speech of Allah, Is it permissible to swear by the Qur'aan?
