As Salaamu 'Alaykum,

Bismillah,

Allah blessed me to attend Rabee' bin Hadee's class today (10/30/2009) on Sciences of Hadeeth.

I gained a small benefit from him today that I personally found very beneficial. He
mentioned a statement of at-Tirmithee [d.279h] in which he (at-Tirmithee)
mentioned a man by his name, "Muhammad".

The point that Rabee' bin Hadee clarified from this incident was that the Salaf didn't
exaggerate in giving people titles. Then, while chuckling, he said, "Look at us today; how
we exaggerate when mentioning people." He said, " Look at the example of at-Tirmithee
[d.279h] and how he sufficed with the just Muhammad."

Then he asked us "Who is this Muhammad?" Alhamdolilah, someone answered, "He is
Muhammad Ismaa'eel al-Bukhaaree [d.256h] !".

He also mentioned that if a title is removed from a person's name, it shouldn't be removed
with the purpose of belittling him.

  • - The point is: Al-Imam al-Bukhaaree's [d.256h] status is well known, but even with that, al-
Imam at-Tirmithee [d279.h] called him Muhammad.

May Allah reward as-Shaykh, Dr. Rabee' bin Haadee al-Madkhalee for this brief but
    valuable benefit.

    Your brother in Islam,

Wa 'alaykum as salaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh akhi,

JazaakAllah khayr for the beneficial post and may Allah reward Shaykh Rabee' (hafidhahullah) for this important reminder.

I remembered what my uncle noticed with regards to the khutbahs and lectures of the Brailwis in India.

When they have to quote what Allah (Azza wa jal) says (which is very rare in most cases), they simply say
Allah said or sometimes they might say Allah (Jalla wa 'ala) said,...

When they have to quote what Rasoolullah SallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam said, they say,
As-Sayyid al-Afdhalul Khalq Muhammad Mustafa SallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam said,...

When they have to quote what Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani rahimahullah said, they say,
Ghauth e Azam, Muhiyuddin, Waliyon ke Wali, Imaam Abdul Qadir Jilani rahmatullahi alayh said,...

When they have to quote what their leader Ahmed Reza Khan (may Allah grant him what he deserves) said, they say,
Imaame Hind, Mujaddid, Mujahid, Shaykhul Islam,  Ala Hadhrat, Imam Ahmed Reza Khan rahmatullahi alayh said, ...

The above are just examples. Sometimes they might even increase in these adjectives!!!

May Allah guide the common Muslims in the Indo-Pak subcontinent and all over the world from such misguided sects. Aameen.

    wa salamu 'alaykum,
    Sajid

    As Salaamu 'Alaykum,

    Bismillah,

Today (11/2/2009), I had an opportunity to ask to Abdul-Majeed Subayyal, teacher at Umm al-
Quraa University, and son of as-Shaykh Muhammad Subayyal, Imam of the Haram in Makkah
about the usage of the term "al-Allaamah".

He said, "This is from the issues that return back to the affairs of how the people in a particular
    place use this term."

He also said (sorry readers, you must know a little 'Arabic to understand this point), "The term
"al-Allaamah" is from the structures of 'Arabic words used when trying to stress a characteristic
    that someone posses.

'Al-Allamah' is from the word 'Aalim': someone knowledgeable. So when you say, 'al-Allaamah',
you are really stressing the amount of knowledge that a person has!"

Then he closed by saying, "This term should be reserved for those older in age, but like I said, its
usuage returns to the customary usage of the people".
