assalamu alaylum

Often when people quote hadith from sahih al bukhari and sahih muslim and they give a number of where i can find the hadith, the number does not correspond to the numbering system in my copy.

I have the 7 volume and 9 volume darussalam editions wit english and arabic.

How do i worl out the numbering system?

Jazak allahu khair

For the two saheehs the standard numbering system that is referred to by most researchers is known as Tarqeem Muhammad Fu'aad 'Abdil-Baaqee.

If the last hadeeth in your copy of Saheeh al-Bukhaaree is 7563, your printing goes by this system.

If the last hadeeth in your copy of Saheeh Muslim is 3033, your printing goes by this system.

If your printing does not go by this numbering system, then you can find the hadeeth by:

[1] Looking it up according to the chapter (kitaab and baab) if you know it

[2] Or by simply skimming near the number given, a few pages before and after especially if it is in the first part of the book, assuming that the numbering system is somewhat close to that of Muhammad Fu'aad 'Abdul-Baaqee's.  However, for Saheeh Muslim, specifically, there is a huge difference in some of the numbering systems, some of them going up to over 7000!

[3] Or by using hadeeth software (like al-Kutub at-Tis'ah) or printed indexes (like al-Mu'jam al-Mufahras) to identify the kitaab and baab.

And Allaah knows best.

Wa'alikum Assalam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

Just adding to what Br. Moosaa said;

if you don't have the Hadith Software, Salafipublications has the link to both Bukharee, and Muslim.....

http://www.sahihalbukhari.com/sps/sbk/

http://www.sahihmuslim.com/sps/smm/

There are both excellent......

If the links do not work then go to salafipublications.com and choose 'bukhari' or 'muslim'......

Inshallah, I hope this helps
