In the book The Concise Legacy by Shaykhul Islaam ibn Taymiyyah, english print, pg. 16 there occurs a  hadeeth:

"The loners (mufarridoon) have taken the lead." The companions asked, "O Messenger of Allaah! Who are the loners?" He replied, "Those men and women who remember Allaah in abundance."

Shaykh Saleem Hilaali writes in its footnotes: (what follows below is the full footnote #30)

This hadeeth is also narrated via a route different to Muslim's by Ahmad and al-Haakim, who declared it to be Saheeh and adh-Dhababi agreed, in which teh final answer to the meaning of 'mufarridoon' is , "Those who are passionately occupied with the Dhikr of Allaah."

Note: In some copies, there has been a mistake in script, such taht the word 'yahtaroon' (they are passinately occupied) became mistaken for 'yahtazzoon) (they stir, move (with the Dhikr of Allaah)). Hence, there is no justification here for dancing Soofis whose psoterirs shake sideways to the Dhikr of Allaah; the Dhikr they use is not even from the Sunnah, so they are guilty of innovation in nature as well as type.

In Imaam an-Nawawi's 'Commentry on Shaheeh Muslim' (17/4), there occurs: "In one narration: 'Ihtazzoo' (they are stirred) in the Dhikr of Allaah." The author adds, "i.e. they are passinate in it." Even if this wording was authentic, it would mean: they rejoice, delight and comfort their hearts with the Dhikr of Allaah. Allaah knows best.

One who is trying to obey his Lord and follow the example of his Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) should know that out of all that is quoted by those who dance while doing Dhikr of Allaah, none of it is authentic, such as the story that Allaah inspired His Prophet(sallallaahu alaihi wasallam) saying,  "Truly, Allaah is pleased with Aboo Bakr, so is Aboo Bakr pleased with his Lord?" so when Aboo Bakr heard that, he began to shake in delight and sway left and right, and began to say,. "How can I not be pleased with Allaah?" Even if this imaginary tale was correct, it would oppose their argument, for allaah describes the believers, saying : "Those who, when Allaah is mentioned, their hearts tremble." Surah Anfaal 8:2.

In contrast, these people remain unmoved when the Qur'aan is recited, whereas when the flute is played, they rush into their well-known movements! However, this incident is not quoted in any Hadeeth, authentic or otherwise

Similar is the case with their quoting 'Alee (radiallaahu anhu) as describing the Companions, "When Allaah was mentioned, they would sway as the tree does on a windy day." Related by Aboo Nu'aim in Hilyatul-'Awliyaa (1/76) with a baseless, clouded Isnaad. This issue has also been discussed in detail by Imaam ash-Shatibee in al-I'tisaam.

Al hamdulillahir rabbil aalameen was salaatu was salaamu 'ala nabeeyinaa Muhammad wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi ajma'een
I too was curious about that rocking and swaying while reciting the Qur'aan! When the 9/11 fitnah was taking place the media would show the schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan with the children doing this rocking and swaying motion. I found this rather ajeeb so I asked a Pakistani brother(who's salafee, wal hamdulilah!)about this and he told me that the children are taught this to get into a rhythm while reciting. His father explained this is how he was taught to recite and his father as well was taught this method. So this bid'dah been around for quite a while, but as for its origin I haven't the slightest clue!

as-salaam alaykum,

Whilst I don't know of why and from when the Muslims started imitating this act of the yahood, I can confirm that it is most definately one of their acts.

In my jahileeyah my old rabbi taught me that the soul of the Jew is like the flame of a candle blowing in the wind.  Also Ibn Maimondes (a famous Jewish scholar) wrote that the reason that the Jews do this is that in the past when books were very few in order to be able to share the same book the people started to rock and sway to enable those behind and around them to read the text.

Bakr Aboo Zayd said that Aboo Hayyaan said (in Al-Bahr Al-Muheet) that Az-Zamakhsharee (the Mu'tazilee) said in Al-Kash-shaaf (that's a wacky chain, and I only brought it to clarify that I do not have Al-Kash-shaaf in my library):

"When Moosaa came with the slates that had the Book of Allaah Most High (the Tawraah) on them, there was no tree, mountain, or rock, except that it shook, and for that reason, you never see a Jew reading the Tawraah expect he shakes and moves his head towards it."

Aboo Hayyaan said: "And this has made its way to the Muslim youth, as I have seen in Egypt, you see them when they read the Qur'aan shaking and moving their heads.  However in our lands, in Al-Andelus and in the West, if a young man would move about when reading the Qur'aan, the teacher would get on him and say, "Do not move about so that you become like the Jews when they study!"

See Tasheeh Ad-Du'aa' of Bakr Aboo Zayd, p.79-81 for some more stuff on swaying and moving about when reading the Qur'aan.

Is there anyone out there that knows the origin of rocking and swaying while sitting, reciting the Qur'aan?

For surely it is seems to be an imitation of the Yahood and the Soofees, may Allaah protect us from being like them!
