بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

As-Salaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuhu! I found the following fatwa from our beloved Sheikh Muhammad Bin Saalih Al-Uthaymeen [rahimahullah] in the third volume of his fataawaa on page 67 under the chapter of Prohibited Expressions.

quote:

Question #413 The Noble Sheikh was asked about these names and they are: Abraar [righteous] and Malaak [Angel] Imaan [Faith] Jibreel and Janaa? So he answered by saying:  do not name [people] with the names Abraar and Malaak and Imaan and Jibreel as for Janaa I do not know the meaning of it.

AS Salaaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah
Is it permissible to name ones children with the names of the malaaikah ( angels) like i.e.: Jibreel, Mikaaeel, Malik, etc? Please state the ruling regarding this.
Jazakullah khairan

as-salaamu 'alaikum,

Does anyone know the correct position concerning the name Ruhullaah?  Is this name specifically for Nabi Isa' ('alaihi as-salaam) ONLY, or can one name their son with this?

[Question 444]

What is the ruling on these nicknames Hujjatullaah [the proof of Allaah] Hujjatul Islaam [the Proof of Islaam] and Aayatullaah [the sign of Allaah] ?

So he [rahimahullah] answered by saying: These nicknames Hujjatullaah and Hujjatul Islaam are new and they are not befitting because there is no hujjaah of Allaah upon His slaves except the Messengers. And as for Aayatullaah, if the intended meaning is general then everything enters into it: And in everything there is an Aayah [sign] ... indicating that He [Allaah] is One. And if what is meant that he is a supernatural sign then this is not possible except by the hands of the messengers, rather it is said that he is an Aalim [scholar] a Mufti [one who possesses the skills and knowledge to give religious verdicts] a Qaadee [Judge] a Haakim [ruler]  an Imaam [religious leader] for him who rightfully is deserving of that.New
