?Wa iyyaakum wa Muhdathaatil Umoor, fa inna kulla muhdathatin bid?ah, wa kulla bid?atin dalaalah??

The words ?muhdathah? and ?bid'ah? are found throughout the authentic narrations of the Messenger of Allaah alaihes Salaatu was salaam. Even in the Khutbatul Haajah: "...for every muhdathah is a bid'ah, and every bid'ah is a dalaalah and every dalaalah is in the Hell-Fire!"

But have you ever stopped to think, exactly what is a muhdathah?

According to the Arabic language, these two words have the same meaning, which is:

'The bringing about something new that had no precedence or did not previously exist?.

As for the Islaamic definition, then there are a few hadeeths that indicate that innovation in the legal sense is:

(a)     ? Bid?ah  and
(b)     -  Muhdathah

With the exception, that the expression ?bid?ah? unrestrictedly applies to ?a blameworthy, invented matter  in the Deen specifically?.

As for the word ?muhdathah, then it unrestrictedly applies to ?a blameworthy, invented matter  in the Deen or in other than the Deen?.

Therefore ? may Allaah have mercy upon you lovers of the Sunnah and haters of Bid?ah ? that al-Ihdaath (inventions/novelties) are more general than al-Ibtidaa? (innovations) because Ihdaath or Muhdathaat are comprised of every blameworthy, invention, whether it is in the Deen or other than the Deen.

Thus, al-Ihdaath/Muhdathaat (inventions, novelties etc.) has a more specific meaning than bid?ah from the linguistic side and more general than it with regards to the Deen.

Wallaahul Musta'aan!

As-Salaamu 'Alaikum Rahmatullah

Akh, would you be able to give us an example of a Muhdatha and bid'ah so we can get a clearer picture, insha-Allah?

as-salaamu 'alaykum

I was wondering, if the muhdath is more broad than the bid'ah, then how are we to understand in the khutbat ul-haajah that "kulla muhdathatin bid'ah"?

jazaaku Allaahu khayran
