Hizb ut-Tahreer the Aqaliyoon (Mu'tazila) of today
Shaikh al-Albanee (rahimahullaah) called Hizb ut-Tahreer the "Aqaliyoon (Mu'tazila) of today." They are people of opinion. Shaikh Albanee has a tape called "Afrakhul Mu'tazila" in which he debated [Hizb ut-Tahreer]. They (Hizb ut-Tahreer) came to him. He [was] in his house.
They wanted to come to his house and debate with him. And the shaikh [rahimahullaah] was at that level of debating, that level of knowledge. They came and sat with him. Wallaahi, just like the Mu'tazila, they [gave precedence to] their 'aql. So the shaikh said, "Do you agree that we [refer matters] to the Qur`an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf?"
The [Hizb ut-Tahreeri] was arguing (this simple point) for a half-hour, arguing. Shaikh al-Albanee said, "No Muslim would reject referring matters back to the Qur`an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf (companions)."
For a half-hour, he argued. Then, he said to Shaikh Albanee, "I gave you a piece of paper regarding conditions of this sitting (debate); read the paper."
The Shaikh said, "What is in this paper that you have written is not revelation, but what I am saying to you is from revelation (Qur`an and Sunnah upon correct understanding), because Allaah says:
|(And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger, if you believe in Allaah and in the Last Day.... (An-Nisa, ayah 59)|
So then [this Hizb ut-Tahreeri] started shouting, then he left - he and the few of those with him. He left shouting and his kunya was Abu Yaasir, so Shaikh Albanee said to him, "You are like Abu 'Sayah' (which means 'shouter, screamer' in Arabic)." [Abu can mean "father of" or "owner of," or something one is known for.]
So this one [and those with him] left and then the next person started speaking. One by one, they fell like dominos. SubhanAllaah!
And this other also brought his 'aql into the affair, and subhanAllaah, he said, "The problem of the Ummah firstly is that we should look at it from the 'aql point of view - not from the religious point of view, because these problems we are having are current-day problems so therefore we have to [give precedence to] our 'aql." [Aoodhubillaah!]
So then the shaikh (rahimahullaah) explained to them that "in the Qur`an, there are things we don't understand by 'aql (intellect)." ...And also Shaikh al-Albanee mentioned that in the Qur`an, Allaah says that it is in your heart that you think with. So your mind is actually in your heart.
Allaah subhanahu wa ta'aala says (what means):
|Have they not travelled through the land, and have they hearts wherewith to understand and ears wherewith to hear? Verily, it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts which are in the breasts that grow blind. (Al-Hajj, ayah 46) |
Do they not then think deeply in the Qur`an, or are their hearts locked up (from understanding it)? (Muhammad, ayah 24)]
Many people believe they think with their heads - until now the people and the scientists and doctors believe that. But actually Allaah says the mind is in the heart; the feeling, the mind, the love, the hate - all of that is in the heart.
Allaahu Musta'aan; you can't contemplate these things with your 'aql, with your mind. These are things from the Unseen, and Allaah tells us, and we are still learning. Allaah knows best.
Taken from the Duroos of the Usool us-Sunnah of Imam Ahmad (rahimahullaah), as explained by Shaikh 'Ubaid al-Jabiree (hafidhahullaah).

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk
If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.
