Delving into the Sciences of the World to prove Islaam

Excerpts from Shaikh 'Ubaid al-Jabiree (hafidhahullaah):
quote:
This was not known at the times of the Salaf, nor was it known by the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam, or the imams of the Tabi'een (the Successors) or those who followed after them. This idea of researching the sciences behind the creation didn't appear until about thirty years or so ago...

This idea of proving Islam through the Sciences is a bid'ah (an innovation). This type of study keeps us away from learning the true religion. My sincere advice to you my sister in Egypt, and other sisters of the Sunnah in Egypt, is that you shouldn't listen to this and must not busy yourselves with this knowledge but rather you should focus on the knowledge of the Sharee'ah which is the knowledge of the Qur`aan and the Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf.

The Sunnah is a way of happiness and tranquillity in this life because the Prophet sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: Whoever Allaah wants good for, He gives him understanding of the religion. So from this, we understand that whoever Allaah does not want good for, He does not give him understanding of the religion.

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.

It was stated that it is bid'ah to use the sciences to prove Islam. But does this mean that one should not use science to understand Allah's (SWT) universe? Is this not what Muslims did during the 700 years of Islam's rule in Spain?

As-salamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa baarakatu, Talib,

A Salafi who heard Shaikh Saalih Luhaydaan (hafidhahullaah) speak about this very matter, relayed the following benefits [this is not verbatim]:

quote:
Using science to understand Allaah's universe still has to come from an Islamic perspective. Likewise, when the Muslims in Spain left the Qur`an and Sunnah, and turned to philosophy and the sciences of the Greeks, Allaah took away their power.

For example, Shaykh Luhaydaan stated that the ayah about the earth and heavens being together, and Allaah seperating them, has nothing to do with the "Big Bang Theory." None of the Salaf or the 'ulamma (scholars) who followed them - past or present - said this. Shaykh Luhaydaan said you can not use modern science to understand the creation of Allaah without the Qur`an and Sunnah, because the theories of science always change. Shaykh Luhaydaan said you never hear the word "truth" from the scientists, so for those who believe that the ayah reflects the "Big Bang Theory," what happens to the ayah [your belief in it] if the theory of the big bang changes? [It's crucially important to understand the Qur`an the way the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) explained the Qur`an to the companions (radiallaahu 'anhum).]

In other words, science is based on theory, and theories alway change. For example, pluto was a planet, now its not. They never say science is exact, or true, because its theory, and theories change based on time or technology. We can say the Qur`an is true, and the authentic ahadeeth are true, because we know it won't change based upon time or technology. The Qur`an and Sunnah are constant.

quote:
It's via the Qur`an that we Muslims learned the earth is round, it is via the Qur`an and Sunnah - revelation from Allaah - that we Muslims learned the sun revolves around the earth. Allaah, Who is All-Knowing and does not err, says: Who is more truthful than Allaah in speech? It is via the Qur`an and Sunnah that we know how the heavens and the earth came into existence. Through revelation from Allaah, do we learn about the creation of Allaah.

Allaah says: O you who believe! If a rebellious evil person comes to you with a news, verify it... (Al-Hujurat 49:6) How is it verified? With the Qur`an and Sunnah. And science is no exception.

Pursue the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir for science matters pertaining to the creation - it's very detailed - and the ahadeeth in Sahih Bukhari. The creation belongs to Allaah, so where else would you understand His creation except from His Book and from His Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)?

May Allaah keep us upon His guidance and the guidance of His Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).

May Allaah reward him for relaying this benefit, maa shaa` Allaah.
