The Virtues of Refuting people of Bid'ah, and its Conditions

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Refuting people of Bid'ah is from Jihaad in the path of Allaah

Question: Is the statement of one who says that: "Whoever refutes the Ahlul-Bid'ah is considered a mujaahid in the Path of Allaah" - is this statement correct or not?

Response by Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee (rahimahullaah):
quote:
Yes. The one who refutes the Ahlul-Bid'ah (people of innovation) is a mujaahid, and there is no doubt about this. Since when Imaam Ahmad ibn Hanbal was told about a man who fasts, and offers salaah, and gives in charity, and performs the i'tikaaf, and does (other) good deeds, and was (then) told about a man who refutes the innovators - implying which of the two was better? He (Imaam Ahmad) said, "Whoever offers salaah and fasts and gives in charity and performs i'tikaaf, then (all of) this is for himself, and as for he who refutes the innovators, then this is for (the benefit of) the people."

So there is no doubt that whoever refutes the innovators is better, and the statements of the 'ulemaa regarding this are many.

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"The one who refutes the innovators is a mujaahid.
" And Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"The jihaad with decisive proofs [from the Book and the Sunnah] and the tongue takes precedence over the jihaad with the sword and the spear."
[al-Jawaab as-Saheeh of Ibn Taymiyyah (1/237)]

Nasr bin Zakariyaa (rahimahullaah) said I heard Muhammad bin Yahyaa adh-Dhuhlee (rahimahullaah) saying, I heard Yahyaa bin Yahyaa (rahimahullaah) saying:
quote:
"Defense of the Sunnah is more superior than jihaad in the path of Allaah." So I said, "A man spends his wealth, tires his body and strives (in jihaad), so is this one (still) better than him? He said, "Yes, by many times!"
[Dhammu al-Kalaam of al-Harawee]

Regarding the difficulty of criticizing innovators, Ibn Taymiyyah relayed the following:
quote:
"When some people said to Imaam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (rahimahullaah) that they felt uneasy about criticizing people, he replied, 'If you remain silent and I remain silent, then who will make the ignorant person aware of the authentic from the defective?'"
[Majmoo'-ul-Fataawaa of Ibn Taimiyyah (28/231)]

Al-Hasan Al-Basree (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"There is no backbiting with regard to (talking about) the innovator or the sinner who openly professes his evil."
[Al-Laalikaa`ee (1/140, no: 279)]

Question: What do you say concerning the statement of the speaker: Indeed, the refutations upon the people of innovations and deviation were not the habitual practice of the Salaf, and that it is not befitting to spread the books of refutations, except amongst the students of knowledge and that they should not be spread amongst other than them?
Answer by Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez Ibn 'Abdullaah aalush-Shaykh:
quote:
The refutations upon the people of innovation are from Jihaad in the path of Allaah. They are from safeguarding the Sharee'ah from having other than it attached to it. So writing the books, publishing them and spreading them is the truth and it is a call to the truth and Jihaad in the path of Allaah. So whoever claims that publishing and spreading the books that contain refutation upon the innovators is an innovated affair, then he is upon error, because Allaah the Sublime and Exalted said: O Prophet! Strive hard against the hypocrites and be harsh with them. [Sooratut-Tawbah 9:73]

And Jihaad can occur by the hand, or it can be with the tongue, or it can be with the wealth. So from Jihaad with the tongue is defending and safeguarding this Sharee'ah from everything that has been fabricated into it from doubts and falsities. And from that as well is warning against the innovations and calling to the truth.

Due to this, Imaam Ahmad (d.241H) and other than him authored books warning against the innovators. So Imaam Ahmad wrote the treatise, ar-Radd 'alaz-Zanaadiqah within which, he clarified their doubts. And he answered every doubt. And al-Bukhaaree (d.256H) (rahimahullaah) wrote his book, Khalq Af'aalul-'Ibaad. And other than them from amongst the Imaams of Islaam wrote books in refutation of the innovators and invalidated their falsities and established the proofs against them. Likewise, Shaykhul-Islaam [Ibn Taymiyyah (d.728H)] wrote in refutation upon the Raafidah in his famous book, Minhaajus-Sunnatin-Nabawiyyah fee Naqd Kalaamish-Shee'ah wal-Qadariyyah. And he clarified what they were upon from falsehood and misguidance.

Imaam Abu Ismaa'eel al-Ansaari (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"Whilst in Haraah: 'The sword was put to my neck five times [and each time] it was not said to me, 'Leave your madhhab' but it was said to me, 'Remain silent about those who are in opposition to you'. So I would say, 'I will not remain silent.'"
[Aadaab us-Sharee'ah (1/207) of Ibn Muflih al-Maqdisi al-Hanbali].

Al-Humaidee (rahimahullaah), the Shaikh of al-Bukhaaree, said:
quote:
"By Allaah, that I war against those who reject the Hadeeth of the Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is more beloved to me than that I should war against the same number of Non-Muslims."
[Al-Harawi in Dhamm ul-Kalaam].

Conditions of Refuting People of Bid'ah

Excerpt:
quote:
Abdus-Salaam as-Suhaymi (hafidhahullaah) wrote that Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah [d.AH 728] said, as he was explaining the permissibility of backbiting an [open] innovator, that two conditions should be fulfilled before doing so:

1. Knowledge

2. Sincerity

Ibn Tamiyyah said: A person who takes up the task of backbiting an [open] innovator should be knowledgeable and sincere. If a person takes part in backbiting an [open] innovator, but the cause of him taking part in backbiting is to raise his own status in the eyes of the people, or to cause corruption, it doesn't matter if he is correct in his criticism. He is like a warrior who goes out to fight in a fit of rage [due to his lack of knowledge], showing off [due to his lack of sincerity]. On the other hand, if he is backbiting an [open] innovator, sincerely for the sake of Allah, he is like the inheritors of the Prophets (the Scholars), the successors of the Messengers, [honorably] fighting in the path of Allah...

Warn People Against Deviants

Shaykh Abdul-Azeez ibn Abdullaah ibn Baaz

Question: Is it permissible to mention peoples names and characters when one wants to criticize tem and their thinking?

Answer: If someone writes something that contradicts the pure Sharee'ah, and distributes that material, or if he promulgates that view in the media, it becomes compulsory to refute him and expose the falsehood of what he says. There is nothing wrong in mentioning that person's name or in warning people about him if he calls to innovation, Shirk, or if he calls to what Allaah has prohibited or to disobedience. Until this day, there are knowledgeable and believing people from the callers to the truth and bearers of the Sharee'ah fulfilling this obligation, sincerely for Allaah Almighty and for the benefit of His servants, rebuking the wrong, inviting to the truth, warning others against those who propagate falsehood and destructive rhetoric.
