wa alaikum salaam

I remmeber being informed that if i was to have a bad dream, i should seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed Shaytaan. This was some time ago, but i did find the narration below to back it up.

AbuQatadah ibn Rib'i narrated:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'The good dream is from Allah, and the bad dream is from Shaytan. When you see what you dislike, spit to your left side three times when you wake up, and seek refuge with Allah from its evil.  It will not harm you then, Allah willing.

AbuSalamah said, "I would see dreams which weighed on me more heavily than a mountain.  When I heard this hadith, I was not concerned about it."

Ibn al-Qayyim said, "The jihaad with decisive proofs [from the Book and the Sunnah] and the tongue takes precedence over the jihaad with the sword and the spear." [Al-Jawaab us-Saheeh of Ibn Taymiyyah (1/237)].

Dreams are of three types:

1) from Allaah
2) from Shaytaan
3) from ones own soul (i.e. what one feels and experiences during the day)

No one should be certain about claiming that a dream is from Allaah, since even Umar ibn al-Khattaab (radiallaahu anhu) despite who he was, whenever he would see something in a dream he would not claim that it is from Allaah.

For a good discussion of this subject, you should refer to Madaarij us-Saalikeen by Ibn al-Qayyim, the first volume, under the section that discusses the levels of guidance, I think under the section of "Ilhaam", it is found from what I remember in the beginning (i.e. between pages 30-70) of the first volume.

if you have access to it then refer to it, or if anyone else has, maybe they can translate it for the benefit of this sister.

I also remember that there was a piece from this section, translated on Salafi Publications, if anyone can find it maybe they can post it here.

Muhammad ibn Sireen said, "But I say this." He said, "It used to be said, 'there are three types of dreams: 1) The reflection of one's thoughts and experiences one has during the working hours, 2) What is suggested by Satan to frighten the dreamer, 3) Or glad tidings from Allah.'

So, if someone has a dream which he dislikes, he should not tell it to others, but get up and offer a prayer."
