As-Salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatu,

I am still fairly new to the deen as I have only been in the deen for about 5 years and only been on the Salafi minhaj for about 1 and a half years. I was hopeing you could tell me how I can start to study to be a student of knowledge so I can teach my family. I am currently in America and as of now I do not have the financies to move to where I can sit with a scholor. I was reading a book named Ten Guidelines for Obtaining Knowledge Writeen by Abdullah bin Salfeeq Adh-Dhufairee and he stated that one thing you must do is sit with a scholor and learn from him. I know that there are no scholors in America so is there advice you can give me until I can afford to move to where there is one. Jazakaa'Allah khair for any assistance in this matter.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatu

Assalamu Alikum Dear Brother!

What I have learnt with regard to seeking ilm is that it should be started with learning the correct intention ŭ seeking the face of your Allaah!

1.   Correctness of Intention:

Regarding keeping the intension correct, you should study a great work of Abdul Salaam Burjis, known as ŭObstacles in The Path of Knowledgeŭ:

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?secID=SCL&subsecID=SCL06&loadpage=displaysubsection.cfm

2.   Methodology of seeking knowledge:

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan said in a fatwa:

ŭHe should begin with that which is easiest step by step; he should begin with the small treatises and study them with the Mashaykh, then gradually advance to more extensive books and like this he continues.

He does not go to the major extensive books from the beginning; rather he should progress to them little by little, graduating step by step.ŭ

Reference: http://www.fatwaislam.com/fis/index.cfm?scn=fd&ID=292

3.   Aqeedah comes first:

To know the importance and understanding the need for Tawheed, study the following work of Abdul Salaam Burjis:

ŭAqeedah comes firstŭ

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?subsecID=AQD01&articleID=AQD010004&articlePages=1

To know about the details of tahweed in Simplified form, study the work by Shaikh Salih al-Fawzaan:

The Aqeedah of Tawheed: Part 1 - The Islamic Aqeedah:

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?subsecID=TAW01&articleID=TAW010011&articlePages=1

The Aqeedah of Tawheed: Part 2 - Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?subsecID=TAW01&articleID=TAW010012&articlePages=1

The Aqeedah of Tawheed: Part 3 - Tawheed ul-Uluhiyyah

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?subsecID=TAW01&articleID=TAW010013&articlePages=1

The Aqeedah of Tawheed: Part 4- Tawheed ul-Asmaa was-Sifaat

http://salafipublications.com/sps/sp.cfm?subsecID=TAW01&articleID=TAW010015&articlePages=1

After making your grounds, study the work of Imaam Muhammad ibn ŭAbd al-Wahhaab (may Allaah have mercy on him):

1.     Usool Thalaathat

2.     Al-Qawaaŭid al-Arbaŭah

3.     Kashf al-Shubahaat

4.     Kitaab Al-Tawheed

Hope, Insha Allaah, it would benefit.

Dear Brother,

As salaamu 'alaykum,

Bismillah,

quote:

I was hopeing you could tell me how I can start to study to be a student of knowledge so I can teach my family.

As-Shaikh Abu 'Abdir-Rahmaan Muqbil bin Haadi al-Waad'ee [d.1422], may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned, "If a student of knowledge is strong in the 'Arabic language, his path to understanding the other sciences of  Islaam will be easier."

Explanation of Tufatus-Saniyyah, Muhammad as-Sagheer, may Allah preserve him, pg:8

Translator's note: Learning the 'Arabic language will also give you the ability to take from the mouths of the scholars yourself (i.e. it will free you from depending on translations).

quote:

I am currently in America and as of now I do not have the financies to move to where I can sit with a scholor.

Make du'aa (supplication) that Allah gives you the ability (physically and financially) to further your studies, and don't let the fact that you are in America stop you from learning 'Arabic! There are many brothers and sisters, who have by the permission of Allah, then their hard work, learned 'Arabic while living in America.

Benefit:

What are some conditions for your du'aa to be answered?

(1) - Sincerity

(2) - Be sure that Allah, the Most High, will answer you.

(3) - Do not ask for something that is impermissible.

(4) - Do not rush the answer.

(5) - Do not transgress the bounds in your supplication. Example: Do not
ask for a place in Paradise better than the places of
        Messengers,alayhim as-salaatu was salaam.

(6) - Make sure that your belongings, food, drink, clothing and home are all
        lawful.

Translator's note: These conditions are a brief, summarized translation of what can be found in As-Shaikh 'Ubaid's, may Allah preserve him, explanation of The Three Fundamental Principles pp:72-73. For a detailed translation, purchase the book. Mashaa Allah, it has been translated in its entirety. May Allah reward those responsible for its publication.

Also, this post is not only directed to you, it is directed to anyone, myself firstly, who may be in the beginning stages of seeking knowledge.

I ask Allah, the Most High, to give us all success in our quests for knowledge.

And Allah, the Most High, knows best.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatu,

Masha Allah all of the advise you have received is excellent. Another idea is to get some like minded (like hearted) brothers together, and invite one of the recommended Du'aat over for a 2-3 day session of classes. A brother from New York came when we offered and it was extremely beneficial.
And, now we have a little tele-link with him on Sunday nights and he is reading the Explainations of AL Qawaa'idul Arba'a and 'Umdatul Ah'kaam to us.

I ask that Allah make it easy for me, and for you, to aquire knowledge of Him, His Prophet (salallahu 'alaihi wasalaam) and His Deen, with all the proofs, Allahumma Ameen.

"It is enough knowledge that one fears Allah, it is enough ignorance that one be impressed by his own knowledge" Masrooq(rahimahullah)

wa 'alaikumus-salaam warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

BaarakAllahu feek yaa akhee. Insha'Allah, don't forget about Reciting, Memorizing, and Reviewing the Qur'aan. Connected to this is learning the 'Arabic Language which would help one understand the Speech of Allah the Most High, and that of His Prophet sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam.

What follows is from a pdf I got from the website MARKAZ TAWHEED WAS SUNNAH in Durham, NC:
quote:
Whoever Allah wants good for He gives him understanding of the Deen (religion)
Explanation of hadeeth taken from:
ةجهب بولق راربلأا و ةرق نويع رايخلا يف حرش عماوج رابخلأا
By As Sheikh Al Allaamah Al Imaam ŭAbdur Rahmaan bin Naasir As Saŭdee (rahimahullah)
Translated by Abu Abdis Salaam Al Juyaanee

On the authority of Muŭaawiyyah (radi Allahu ŭanhu) who said, the Messenger of Allah (sallalaahu ŭalaihi was sallam) said, ŭHe who Allah wants good for He gives him understanding of the deen (religion).ŭ [hadeeth reported by Bukhaari and Muslim].

This hadeeth is one of the greatest (proofs of the) superiority of (beneficial) knowledge. In it is (the understanding) that beneficial knowledge is both a sign of happiness for the servant and that Allah wants good for him.

Understanding of the religion encompasses the understanding of the fundamental principles of Emaan, the legislative matters and rulings of Islaam, as well as the realities of Ihsaan. This is because the Deen encompasses all three of these affairs. Like in the hadeeth of Jibreel when he (ŭalaihis salaam) asked the Prophet (sallalaahu ŭalaihi was sallaam) about Emaan, Islaam and Ihsaan. He (sallalaahu ŭalaihi was sallam) answered him by outlining each of them. He (sallalaahu ŭalaihi was sallam) explained Emaan by (stating) its six principles (i.e. the six pillars of Emaan), and Islaam by (stating) its five principles (i.e. the five pillars of Islaam), and Ihsaan by his (sallalaahu ŭalaihi was sallam's) statement, ŭTo worship Allah as if you see Him and although you do not see him, know that He sees you.ŭ

So entering into this is the servants understanding of ŭAqeedah and knowing the way of the Salaf with regards to it, and (having both) an outward and inward conviction for it. As well as knowing the way of those (ignorant groups) who differed, went astray, and go against the way of the Salaf and knowing clearly their deviation from the Kitaab and Sunnah.
Fiqh (Islaamic Jurisprudence) is also entered into this; its fundamental principles (usool) and that which is not considered from this category (farooŭa). Knowing the rulings with regards to the acts of worship, mutual dealings, crimes/punishments and other than this.

Also entering into it is the understanding of the realities of Emaan. The knowledge of how one behaves properly towards Allah in accordance with the Kitaab and Sunnah. Likewise, entering into it is the knowledge of every (science) that would aid him in understanding the religion. Like the science of the Arabic language and all of its branches.

So whoever Allah wants good for, He gives them understanding of these (previously mentioned) affairs and success in them. The understanding of the hadeeth also points to (the fact) that verily Allah does not want good for the one who turns away from these sciences in totality. This is due to the individualŭs denial of (these) means and ways of obtaining good and earning happiness.
