As-Salaamu 'alaykum,

I was wondering if those brothers who have been blessed to have a grasp of the Arabic Language could post advice for those of us who are just beginning or have been struggling to learn it. If the brothers can just pass on some "how to" tips  and things that have worked for them so that we may all benefit, and the Tawfeeq is from Allaah.

Jazakum Allaahu khairan.

Assalaamu 'Alaikum

First, I apologize for my english level not being very good so I would ask you to be indulgent if there are some grammar mistakes !

I can tell you about the program followed by those who do not masterize arabic language in Dammaj because I visited Daar Al-Hadeeth last year.

They begin with the three books of Medinah and then study Al-Aadjurruumiyyah. Afterwards, they study Mutammimatu-l-Aadjurruumiyyah, then Qatr An-Nadaa, and finally Alfyyatu-bni-Maalik. Some of the brothers also study Ibn Maalik's Laamiatu Al-Af'aal, a book dealing with Sarf.

As far as I'm concerned, I've begun with An-Nahwu Al-Waadih (very clear and simple, maa shaa Allaah), then At-Tuhfah As-Sunniyyah Sharh Al-Aadjurruumiyah in parallel with Shaikh Al-Uthaimeen's explanation of Al-Aadjurruumiyah (16 cassette tapes, if I remember well). After these books, I've studied some chapters of Al-Alfyyah and Djaami' Ad-Duroos Al-'Arabiyah, which is very complete and exhaustive.

You need a teacher who speaks arabic fluently to begin. If you already have notions in Arabic, it will be easier. I advise you to make efforts to listen to Scholar's duroos on cassette tape and force yourself not to be dependant on translation, except when necessary. Shaikh Al-Fawzaan, Shaikh Saalih Aali Shaikh, Shaikh 'Ubayd Al-Djaabirî - for example - speak arabic very clearly in their duroos, so I advise you to listen to their tapes and to try to understand. It will be hard at the beginning, but with tawakkul, du'aa, patience and perserverance, Allaah Subhaanahuu wa Ta'aalaa will help you in shaa Allaah.

Try to speak arabic whenever and wherever it is possible. Stick to salafi brothers and tullaab 'ilm who speak arabic fluently and tell them to only speak with you in Arabic even if it is somewhat difficult. Try to force yourself to read Scholar's little leaflets (rasaa'il) and learn vocabulary little by little.

Arabic must be an important objective if you want to learn quickly, and I remember a statement of Shaikh Saalih Aali Shaikh in the first tape of Sharh Al-Usuul Ath-Thalaathah : "Al-'Ilmu laa yu'teeka ba'dahuu hattaa tu'tiahu kullaka" (Science do not give you a part of itself, as long as you do not give it all your time and efforts... sorry for the translation !)

And be perseverant :

"Al-Yawma 'ilmun wa ghadan mithluhuu
Min Nukhabi-l-'Ilmi-llatee tultaqat
Yuhassilu-l-Mar'u biha hikmatan
Wa innama-ssaylu-djtimaa'un-nuqat"

Wassalaamu 'Aleikum Wa Rahmatullaah

العلم لا يعطيك بعضه
حتى تعطيه كلك

"Knowledge will not give you something from itself
until you give ALL of yourself to it."

That's beautiful, maa shaa' Allaah.  May Allaah reward you akhee Abaa Talhah for your advice and inspiration.
