There was some discussion some years ago around some of the callers in Egypt who were denying that there was a classification of hadeethul-Hasan, whether it was Hasan Li Dhaatihi (graded Hasan upon its own merit) or Hasan li Ghairihi (a hadeeth that is weak in and of itself with a weakness that is not severe and due to other supporting narrations equal to it or stronger than it it is raised to the level of Hasan) with the argument that the scholars from the Mutaqaddimun (earlier generations) did not use this classification and that it was an invention of the Muta?akhirun (later scholars).

This corrupt understanding of theirs has been refuted by a number of scholars of our time at the head of them al-Muhaddith Muhammad Naasirud-Deen al-Albaanee, may Allah have mercy upon him, as the Shaykh labeled those who rejected the classification of al-Hasan to be the Khawaarij of Mustalah (hadeeth terminology). But there arose a buzz from some of the students [from the West] of these callers to this ideology that those who called to this thought were still upon the Sunnah and that this affair alone was not sufficient to take them out of Salafiyyah.

Some years ago Shaykh al-Albaanee was asked in a series of cassettes about this issue of the classification of al-Hasan and those callers who deny it, so we wanted to show the statement of Sheikh Al-Albaanee to show the true nature of those who call to this ideology and whether what they are upon is sufficient to take them out of Salafiyyah.

The Shaykh was asked: ?From what you have pointed to that the question has no value from the stand point of history, but our brothers who these principles have confused say: ?The Mutaqaddimun did not have hadeeth Hasan, and it was invented by the Muta?akhirun so they opposed the Mutaqaddimun with this?, so they are concerned with who was the first to use [the term] al-Hasan from this position.?

The Shaykh answered: ?What will be the result, may Allaah bless you, and I explained it before, what will be the result of knowing who [was the first] to use the term As-Saheeh? Who was the first to use the term al-Mustafeed? Who was the first to use the term Mutawaatir and Mashoor?  You will never be able to say so and so was the first to use [the term] al-Mutawaatir, so and so was the first to use [the term] al-Mustafeed, so and so is the first to use [the term] al-Mashoor, nay so and so was the first to use [the term] as-Saheeh, and them what is the benefit? If we knew in all of the terminologies that the first to use such and such was so and so, what is the benefit? What is the gain?

I said before, may Allaah bless you, even if we knew who used a term but after that they (the scholars) abandoned it, and left it, then what is the benefit? Now you are tested by these innovators, innovators are not only [found] in Fiqh and [affairs of ] worship. No. Inovators are many, and now there are many innovations in the science of Hadeeth, so now you are tried by these innovators??

Later in the second sitting with the Shaykh, the questioner asked: ?You mentioned in the previous sitting that the one who denies the hadeethul-Hasan is an innovator, so do you mean al-Hasan in its two parts1, or more specifically is the one who denies al-Hasan Li Ghayrihi an innovator?

The Shaykh answered: ?There is no doubt that the matter is no different from what we mentioned previously, whether it is a hadeeth hasan li dhaatihi or hasan li ghairihi, and to add to this I will also say similar about the Hadeeth Saheeh li dhaatihi and Saheeh li ghairihi, and in reality these issues are not understood well except by one who has practical application of this science firstly, and for a long period of time secondly.

Because from what is crystal clear that the hadeeth Hasan li dhaatihi if there comes to us another chain that is Hasan li dhaatihi, then it will not remain at the first level with the people of knowledge, meaning Hasan li dhaatihi; because the matter resembles arithmetic: one plus one equals two, one plus one does not equal one, so a hasan li dhaatihi hadeeth and a hasan li dhaatihi hadeeth does not equal hasan li dhaatihi, rather it equals a Saheeh li ghairihi by the combination of the two Hasan chains, so this issue is clear for the one who understands this affair??
