إذا نطق السفيه فلا تجبه  فخير من إجابته السكوتُ
فإنك إن أجبته فرَّجت عنه    وإن خلَّيتَهُ كَمَداً يَمُوتُ

It has been said:

"When the foolish one speaks, do not reply to him,
               For better than a response (to him) is silence;

For verily if you reply to him you have aided him,
               And if you left him (with no reply), in anger he dies!"

What an excellent reply! The dogs that bark are way too many for Ahl us-Sunnah to become occupied with them.

That's how it should read, there was a small mistake in the one on the top of the thread.  This makes the nagham proper.  Thus the meaning is also slightly different:

"When the foolish one speaks, do not reply to him,
               For better than a response (to him) is silence;

And if you speak to him you have aided him,
               And if you left him (with no reply), in extreme sadness he dies!"

This has been attributed to Imaam Ash-Shaafi'ee.

Barakallaahu feekum yaa Abal-Abbaas. May Allaah give you and your family strength. And we pray that Allaah silences the people of hizbiyyah.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Jazakallakhair akh Moosa for posting this wonderful poetry of Imaam Shaafiee.

A little while ago I found these lines in a book called "Deewaan Al-Imaam Ash-Shaafiee" by someone called Naeem Zarzoor who collected and explained many of Imaam Shaafiee's poems. I think he's from Lebanon and apart from that I don't know anything about him (aqeedah, manhaj etc.) I translated these lines and sent them to someone, but having looked at what you put up I realised that I had mistranslated a couple of words. Jazakallkhair for that!!!

However, I also noticed that on the last line of the poem you translated the word kamadan كمدا as "...in anger he dies".

In his explanation of this word, the compiler of the above book says:
" Al-Kamad: Extreme saddness".

This seems to tie in with what Ibn MandHoorAl-Ifreeqee says in Lisaan-al-Arab:
"Al-Kamad: Anxiety and saddness, its coming to an end end not being possible. Al-Jawhary (says): Al-Kamad, hidden saddness".

Al Feerawzabaadee also says in his Al-Qaamuus Al-Muheet after giving other meanings:
"And Al-Kamad....and extreme saddness and a disease of the heart from it".

Thus, maybe it would be better to translate the last line as:
"...in extreme saddness he dies".

Allah knows best.

Abu Yusuf, Sagheer
