Asalamu alykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu ukhtee

Inshallah, if you go on this link you will see a fatawa by  Sheikh Abdul-Aziz Ala-Shaykh. One of the reasons he stated was that it originates from Sufi Chants, Allahu Musta'aan.

http://www.salafitalk.net/st/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=16&Topic=6686

You can go on www.albaseerah.com and look at the Ark newsletter 11#, mashallah a very benefical piece extracted from the works of shaykh Salih al Fawzaan called "Don't lesson to nasheeds!".

I hope this helps.

Nasheed is Worse than Music

A student of knowledge told us that nasheed is worse than music, because no one claims he is drawing closer to Allaah by listening to music, but those who listen to nasheed do actually claim they are drawing closer to Allaah by it, and do consider it part of the religion, and therefore this is bid'ah.

And, of course, bid'ah is worse than a sin because the one who commits bid'ah thinks himself to be right and does not make tawbah for that bid'ah, whereas those who commit a sin know that tawbah needs to be made for it.

The Prophet (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whosoever does an action which we have not commanded, then it must be rejected." (Muslim)

Sufyaan ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said: "Innovations are more beloved to shaytan than sin, since a sin may be repented from but an innovation is not repented from." [Sharh Usul I'tiqaad of al-Laalikaa'ee, no. 238]

In addition to the above reason, those who commit bid'ah are making this part of the religion - Aoodhoobillaah - and as a result ensuing generations grow up thinking this bid'ah to be from Islam, and falsely attributing it to what Allaah ('azza wa jall) sent down to His Messenger (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).

Imaam Al-Awzaa'ee (rahimahullaah) said: "When innovations emerge and the People of Knowledge do not show rejection against them, they become the sunnah [in the mind of the ignorant]." [Tahdheeb Sharaf Ashaabul-Hadeeth of al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadee, p.46]

Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"He who innovates an innovation in Islam regarding it as something good, has claimed that Muhammad (sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) has betrayed his trust to deliver the message as Allaah says (what means), 'This day I have perfected for you your religion.' And whatsoever was not part of the religion then, is not part of the religion today."
[al-I'tisaam]

Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-'Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) said: "Therefore, the innovations, in reality are indirect criticisms of the Shari'ah; because they necessitate the implication that the Shari'ah is incomplete and that the innovation is a more perfect form of worship to seek nearness to Allaah as the innovator claims." [Majmoo' Fataawa wa Rasaa'il - Volume Two, Number 345]

'Abdullaah ibn 'Umar (radi Allaahu 'anhuma) said: "Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people regard it as good." (ad-Daarimee)

Ibn 'Abbaas (radiallaahu anhuma) said: "Indeed the most detestable of things to Allaah are the innovations." (al-Bayhaqee in as-Sunan al-Kubraa (4/316))

Scholars' statements regarding Anasheed

Shaikh al-'Uthaimeen (rahimahullaah) said:
quote:
"The "Islamic" anasheed is an innovated chanting innovated by the Sufis. Therefore, one should turn away from it and resort to the admonitions from the Qur`aan and Sunnah, unless it is used in the battlefields to help as a motivation for Jihaad in the cause of Allah, the Most High; [only] then this is good. However; if it is accompanied with the duff, then it would be far away from the truth."

Shaykh Muhammad Jamaal ad Deen al Qaasimee (rahimahullaah) stated concerning these Anasheed: "This distasteful custom that is practiced in most Masaajid, when there is only five or three nights remaining in Ramadaan, the Mu-adhins and other volunteers gather, when the Imaam finishes the Witr and gives Salaams, they leave off reading what was authentically reported such as Tasbeeh and take turns reading parts of a poem about the sorrow of the departure of Ramadaan. Whenever one of them finishes singing a part of it with a loud voice, his companions follow up with their part, exerting all their effort in singing and shouting it as loud as possible with a clamor that would make a person go deaf, rather a deaf person would be able to hear it. Their melody is willfully aided by the rest of those who come for the prayer." [Islaah al Masaajid P.146, Tasheeh ad Du'aa P.510]

Shaykh Muhammad al-Maaliki (hafidhahullaah) said: Wallaahi this issue has spread in the Muslim world today. It started as a means of teaching, but now it is a form of material enjoyment. They are not able to do without it and this is really bad as it will lead to the days of the Sufis - where they used to worship Allaah by anaasheed and they called it Islaamic songs. There are no Islaamic songs.

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.

Asalaamu alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatu

i know that nasheeds are bid'ah
does that mean that nasheeds fall in the same catagory as music? as a sister has previusly asked me why, needing evidence, as some nasheeds apparantly dont use instruments and is just based upon using quran or arabic phrases, about the deen
but unfortunately i couldnt explain or find anything related.

JazakAllah Khayran

"So glorify the Praises of your Lord, and ask His forgiveness.
Verily, He is the One Who accepts the repentance and Who forgives" (110:3)

Hello,

I first invite you to read this:

Do you worship The Creator (alone) without partners?

Unless you read and learn about the fundamentals - and that which determines one's final abode in either Paradise or the hellfire - you will not understand the prohibition of Music. By truly understanding the Creed (singling out Allaah with all worship) and religion (Islaam) that Allaah sent down to Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Noah, and all the Prophets (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon them all), and by understanding the Names and Attributes of Allaah, the Lord of all that exists, and the Perfect Wisdom and Mercy in Allaah's commands, and the outright danger of dying upon any religion outside of Islaam, then you'll be able to understand the prohibition of Music and its Perfect and Complete Wisdom.

Allaah commands His servants and prohibits His servants for the purpose of testing us, and so that those who fear Him prepare themselves for the Day of Judgement, instead of being distracted and becoming heedless of the Day of Judgement, and thus become losers (of Paradise) on the Day of Judgement. And from Allaah's Perfect Wisdom and Mercy and Generosity, He commanded all those who invite unto His Religion to begin with: the two testimonies that mean: I testify that there is none who has the right to be worshipped except Allaah (alone), and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, and Jesus is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah wants good for His slaves.

Overwhelming Evidences of Prohibition of Music

From QUR`AN: And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allaah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allaah, the Verses of the Qur`an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire). (Luqman, verse 6)

From TAFSIR IBN KATHIR: The Doomed are preoccupied with Idle Talk and They turn away from the Ayat (Verses) of Allah. When Allah mentions the blessed - who are those who are guided by the Book of Allah and benefit from hearing it, as He says:

Allah has sent down the Best Statement, a Book, its parts resembling each other (and) oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it. Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah (Az-Zumar, verse 23). He connects that with mention of the doomed, those who turn away from the Qur`an and do not benefit from hearing the Words of Allaah. Instead, they turn to listening to flutes and singing accompanied by musical instruments. As Ibn Mas`ud (one of the companions of the Messenger) commented about the Ayah:

And of mankind is he who purchases Lahu Al-Hadith to mislead (men) from the path of Allah, he said:
quote:
This - by Allaah - refers to singing.

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah without knowledge, Qatadah said:
quote:
By Allah, he may not spend money on it, but his purchasing it means he likes it, and the more misguided he is, the more he likes it and the more he prefers falsehood to the truth and harmful things over beneficial things.

It was said that what is meant by the words purchases idle talks is buying singing servant girls. Ibn Jarir said that it means all speech that hinders people from seeing the signs of Allaah and following His path. His saying:

To mislead (men) from the path of Allah means, he does this to oppose Islam and its followers.

and takes it by way of mockery, Mujahid said:
quote:
This means mocking the path of Allaah and making fun of it.

For such there will be a humiliating torment. Just as they showed no respect to the signs and path of Allaah, so they will be shown no respect on the Day of Resurrection, and they will be subjected to a painful, ongoing torment.

From FATAAWA (religious verdicts) (which includes another hadeeth) on it from Permanent Committee for Research and Verdicts: And of mankind is he who purchases idle talk (Lahwul-Hadeeth) to mislead men from the path of Allaah without knowledge, and takes it by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment. [Luqman, verse 6] The singing that the questioner mentioned is part of Lahwul-Hadeeth. It tempts heart, and it leads it to evil, taking it away from good, and causing people to waste their time. So because of this, it falls under the general meaning of Lahwul-Hadeeth (idle talks), it is the same for one singing and the one who listens to singing, all of them fall under the general category of purchasing Lahwul-Hadeeth and misleading others from the path of Allaah. So there is prohibition and a warning of a sever punishment for doing so. Just as the prohibition of singing and listening to it is proven in the Qur`aan, so too [is it proven in] the Sunnah.

The Prophet (Allaah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, in a hadeeth:
quote:
There will be from my Nation a people who will deem fornication, silk (for men), alcohol, and music to be permissible; and there will be a people who will camp beside a high mountain, when a poor man passes by them and asks for a need, they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' In the morning Allaah will make the mountain fall upon them and the others (who are saved) are transformed into apes and pigs, until the Day of Judgement. (Al-Bukhari no. 5990)

Music is the use of instruments of Lahw, and part of this is singing and listening to it. So Allaah's Messenger (Allaah's peace and blessings be upon him) condemned those who seek to legalize fornication, the use of silk for men, drinking alcohol, and such entertainment instruments and listening to them. Here he accompanied music with other major sins. In the end of the Hadeeth he threatened those who do that with a punishment. This shows that listening to music is unlawful. But a person is not sinning when he accidentally listens to music, such as a person who is walking in the street and hears music being played in stores, or in a car, as long as he does not desire to listen to it. Such a person is not sinning because he has no choice; however, he must advise and warn those who are playing the music, he must do so with wisdom and good exhortation. And should avoid as much as possible going to places where music is played, and Allaah does not place a burden on a soul greater than it can bear.

From Famous Companion: Abdullah b. Mas'ood (radiallaahu 'anhu) said:
quote:
Singing sprouts hypocrisy (nifaq) in the heart as water sprouts greens and herbs.

Ibn Battah, Al-Ibanah Al-Kubra Vol.2 p469, and Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Sunan Al-Kubra Vol. 52 p231.

From SCHOLARS:

Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in Madarij Al-Salikin, Vol.1 p487: These are the words of someone who fully understood singing and its effects, for no one regularly sings or listens to song except that his heart falls into nifaq without him realizing. If such a person understood the reality of nifaq and its end he would see it in his own heart. Never do the love of song and the love of Qur`an come together in a person's heart except that one expels the other. I and others have witnessed how heavy the Qur`an feels to singers and song-listeners; how they coil when it is recited and how they get angry with a reciter when he recites too long for them (in prayer etc); and how their hearts do not benefit from what he recites: they are not moved to do anything by it. But when the Qur`an of Shaytan comes, la ilaaha illallaah! How they lower their voices and settle down! How their hearts feel at peace and how the crying and emotions start, how moved they are inwardly and outwardly and spend on clothing and perfume and staying up hoping for a long night ahead. If this is not nifaq then it is certainly the way to it and its foundation.

According to the four imams: http://www.troid.org/media/pdf/music.pdf

The Sunnah of the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) of Placing index fingers in ears when music is heard:

Sulayman bin Moosa reported on the authority of Naafi', who said: I was with Ibn 'Umar on a road when he heard the sound of someone playing a wind instrument (i.e. pipe), which caught his attention. So he [Ibn 'Umar] turned away from the road and put his index fingers in his ears. Then he said: 'O Naafi', do you hear it? Do you hear it?' I said: 'Yes.' So he continued on and then said: 'O Naafi', do you still hear it?' I said: 'No.' So he took his hands out of his ears and said: 'This is what I saw Allaah's Messenger (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) do.'"

Reported by Abu Dawud in his Sunan, saying of it, "This hadith is munkar." It was also reported by Abu Bakr al-Khalaal through numerous paths of narration. Ahmad reported with a good chain of narration, and Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned it in his Majmoo'-ul-Fataawa (30/212). However, the hadith is not void of weakness. Refer to the Takhreej of Mishkaat-ul-Masaabeeh by Imam al-Albanee (no. 4811).

Ahmad ibn Hanbal was asked about this hadeeth, so he said: Sulayman bin Moosa reported it from Naafi' from Ibn 'Umar.

Imam Abu Muhammad Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisee [Died 620 H] said:
quote:
This is a profound action from the Prophet (salallaahu 'alaihiwasallam) indicating its forbiddance, due to his sealing off of his ears (from hearing it) and his turning away from that road.
One of these acts is not sufficient without the other. This was because he heard wind instruments being played."

Subhanak Allaahuma wa bihamdika ash-hadu anlaa illaaha illa anta astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk

If I said anything correct, then it is from Allaah (subhanahu wa taa'ala), and if I erred, then that is from me and shaytan.

as-salaamu 'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

1) An explanatory discussion concenrning music by the Permanent Committee for Research and Verdicts. http://www.fatwaislam.com/fis/index.cfm?scn=fd&ID=502

2) The Ruling Concerning Music According to the Four Imaams

The first might be better as it quotes verses and ahadeeth and explains them, unlike the second which mostly brings the Statements of the Imaams (may Allah have mercy upon them and their students, ameen).

BaarakAllahu feekum.

Here is a fatwa from www.fatwa-online.com
MISCELLANEOUS \ New Muslims \

Changing one's name after embracing Islaam
*Please appropriately reference this fatwa to: www.fatwa-online.com, thankyou!*
Question: Does a new Muslim have to change his name?

Response: It is not obligatory, however, if his name is well-known as a name of the disbelievers, then it is better for him to change his name to one recognised amongst the Muslims as a Muslim name.

I want to know what the proofs are and where I could find out about Music not being allowed in Islam. Ive looked and looked (must not be in the right places) and cant find anything saying it isnt permissable. So if someone could point that out to me id appreciate it.

Also I was told by someone that once you become muslim you would have to change your name... is that obligatory, or just a choice. If its obligatory then I ask why. Thanx
