Shaikh Muhammad al-Uthaymeen, rahimahullaah said:

ash-Shukr is literally 'obedience towards the bestower of the favor or benevolence'.

Shukr (Thanks) will exist by three things:

1-By the Heart: (So the person) acknowledges that this ni'mah or favor is from Allaah, the Most High.

2-By the Tongue: (The person) mentions the ni'mah or favor in a manner of extolation, laudation of Allaah, the Most High for that blessing.

3-By the Limbs: (The person) employing his limbs in the obedience of Allaah, the Most High.
