And this narration is supported by the hadeeth which is agreed upon from Abdullah ibn Masood in Marfoo form, ?O you young people whoever amongst you has the ability to marry then let him do so, for it lowers the gaze and offers more protection for the private parts, and whoever cannot (marry) then he should fast, for it contains a dampening of his desire.? And its takreej is given in ?Saheeh Abu Dawood? (1785) from the hadeeth of Uthmaan and its takhreej is given in the comments on ?Al-Ahadeeth al-Mukhtaarah? (no. 356 with my checking) So this hadeeth contains a Prophetic guidance for curing lust and the build up of desires amongst the youth who cannot get married. And verily it is fasting, so it is not permissible for them to engage in the ?secret habit? - masturbating with the hand, due to the principle about whom it was said, ?Do you exchange that which is lower for that which is better.? (al-Baqarah: 61). And also because masturbation is not, in and of itself, from the characteristics of the believers who have been described by Allaah in the Noble Qur?aan as, And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts). Except from their wives or  that which their right hands possess(the captives and slaves), for then, they are free from blame; But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors? (Al-Mu'minun: 5-7) And Aishah (radiallahu anhaa) said regarding the tafseer of this ayah, ?So whoever seeks beyond what Allaah has married him to or that which he posseses (a slave girl) then he has transgressed the bounds.? Reported by al-Haakim (2/393) and he declared it saheeh according to the conditions of the two Shaikhs and adh-Dhahabee agree with him.
