I am asking members of this noble and beneficial forum to help me in understanding what is precisely meant when one person says to another I love you for Allaah's Sake. Is it demonstrated by sticking by a person thru "thick and thin" without gaining any material benefit? If not, then how do you attain it and how is it demonstrated? Are there any hadeeth that mention the circumstances surrounding the hadeeth of Rasoolullaah, salla Allaahu alayhi wasallam when teaching his companions the duaa to say when someone pronounces their love for you. say: "May He, for Whom you love me, love you". Abu Dawud
What I think that relates to this topic is the saying of the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم:لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه None of you beleive until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. Shaikh al Albaani was asked concerning the meaning of this hadeeth and went on to explain that it means 'None of you beleive until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself FROM THAT GOOD' so that which he loves for his brother/sister must be halal and from that which is good. Also the famous hadeeth when the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said: love the one you love moderatley as one day you may have to hate him (for the sake of Allaah) and visa versa.

It was said to Imaam Ahmad,"what is(the meaning) loving for the sake of Allaah?" He said,"It is that you dont love him due to a desire for his dunya". [Tabaqaat al Hanaabilah p.57 vol.1 Darul Kutub al Ilmiyah]
