as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu
Ya ikhwan,
I have a question that, if anyone has a connection to any of the ulama, they can extend to the scholar insha Allaah ta'aala.

What is the difference between a will and inheritance? \

The reason I ask this question is because my family are non-muslims and my mother and step father had put in their will, that I receive half of what is left behind and my brother receive half, if they happen to pass away before me.  So the second part of the question is

Am I entitled to half of what was in the contract of the will?  Or is this considered inheritance in which can I can inherit nothing.

jazakum Allaahu khairan

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu

jazak Allah

Wa alaykumussalaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,

Until a scholar or student of knowledge can address your concerns, the best I can recommend is to refer to the following book:

"The Inevitable Journey (Book 2), Inheritance - Regulations & Exhortations"
http://www.troid.org/store/product.php?productid=16238&cat=0&page=1

Summary: Inheritance - Regulations & Exhortations 2nd Edition (formerly known as The Islamic Will and Testament) Inheritance distribution is a religious issue that Allah decreed in his revelation. Our obligation is to understand it and implement it correctly. Neglecting this, especially in non-Muslim countries, may lead to distributing a Muslim's estate in discord with Allah's guidance, and may deprive some of the rightful heirs. With this in mind, we included in this book: 1. A concise study of the Islamic Law of Inheritance. 2. Authentic information and instructions for writing a will. 3. Practical ready-to-fill will and supplementary forms.
