as-salaamu 'alaykum,

my family a couple of weeks ago had our first home birth.  i want to know what we should do with the placenta.  the midwife (a christian) told us to keep it for 2 weeks (due to some stem cells in the blood of the placenta, that can treat serious illnesses that would arise within the 2 weeks) in the freezer, and then throw it away on trash day.  when sisters were visiting my wife, one of them said that she was told from one of the "scholars" here in the states that it is obligatory to bury it, because it belongs to allaah and so we have to return it to him.  what is the ruling on this?  please reply because trash day is coming up!

When our father, elder and teacher Shaikh Muhammad al-Uthaymeen, rahimahullaah was asked about the placenta, the nature of it and if it did not have any use what to do with it he replied:

"The human material that is dead, its origin is pure.....and that which is apparent, is that it falls under a (similar) category as nails and hair".

This fatwaa is taken from our website assalafi.com and it has some relation to what our brother Aboo Tasneem mentioned, hafidhahullaah.

Ibn 'Uthaymeen discusses the ruling on burying hair that has been cut.
Translated by Abu Sumayyah Aqeel Walker

Question: What is the ruling regarding burying hair that falls out and hair that has been cut?

Answer: Some of the scholars consider it recommended for the person to bury whatever he removes of his hair or his nails or his teeth, and they mention a narration concerning that from Ibn 'Umar (i.e. an athar or statement of Ibn 'Umar himself) (radhiyallaahu 'anhumaa). And there is no doubt that the practice of the companion of the Prophet is better than the practice of anyone other than him. This is the view that has been taken by our Jurists (Fiqh scholars), may Allaah have mercy upon them. They said, "Verily it is desired that the person bury whatever he removes of hair, nails, teeth and similar things."
