With regards to the issue of men braiding their hair, then there comes in the hadeeth of Umm Haani' bint Abee Taalib where she said, "The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam traveled to Makkah and he had his hair in four braids."  The hadeeth is collected by Aboo Daawood (#4185), Ibn Maajah (#3631 according to Al-Albaanee), and Al-Albaanee authenticates it in Ash-Shamaa'il Al-Muhammadiyyah (#23) and he says in the footnotes, defining the meaning of dhufr (braid): "it is a section of loose hair that is taken and twisted together." (p.35)

Also what comes in the hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbaas in Saheeh Muslim, that he saw Abdullaah ibn Al-Haarith praying with his hair braided back, and Ibn Abbaas unbraided Abdullaah ibn Al-Haarith's hair while he was praying.  So Ibn Al-Haarith asks him after the prayer, "What is with you and my head?"  Ibn 'Abbaas replied, "Verily I heard the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam say: Indeed the example of the one who prays like this is like the example of the one who prays with his hands bound."  [Saheeh Muslim, see The Prophet's Prayer Described p.143]

And in another narration in Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmithee that At-Tirmithee grades as hasan (an acceptable level of authenticity less than saheeh), "and that (the braids) is the resting place of the Shaytaan."

Al-Albaanee gives a nice faa'idah, he says, "And the meaning of the hadeeth is that if his hair is unplatted or untied and it falls upon the earth when he prostrates, he is given the reward for each hair that touches the ground.  So if it is braided back, it becomes as if it does not prostrate.  And this parable of it being like hands bound back, is because they (the hands) would not touch the ground during prostration.  So I say it appears that this ruling is specific to the men, not the women, as was quoted by Ash-Showkaanee from Ibn Al-'Arabee." [The Prophet's Prayer p.143 arabic edition]

As for dreadlocks, then this is different from braids, as braids can be undone and dreadlocks can not.  And there is also the other issue of the dreadlocks being a religious custom of the rastafarians who are mushrikoon.

I hope this gives some benefit in shaa' Allaah.

Ahab-bak Allaahu akhee Maalik!  That's an excellent point about the prohibition of praying with the hair braided back!  It shows that we don't have to go to the lengthy discussion of whether or not the fact that it is a custom of the rastafarians makes it haraam or not, but rather the fact that a man is not allowed to pray with his hair braided back prevents us from having dread locks, since dreadlocks can not be taken down for the prayer.  And the prohibition is a serious one obviously, since Ibn 'Abbaas enforced it during someone's prayer the way he did!

Alhamdulilaah was salaatu was salaamu alay muhammadin sal'Allahu alahi wa ala alahi wa sahbihi ajma'een thumma ama'baad Yaa Ikwa!! I was looking for further clarification on the issue of praying with braids or closely platted hair. I was reading the prophets prayer described(the english translated version)taken from shaykh Albaani rahimutallah on page 53 where it describes the sajdah, it says in one verse quote(He said about a man who was praying with his hair tied behind him, His example is surley like that of someone who prays with his bound(behind his back). He also said, That is the saddle of the devil, where the devil sits, reffering to the knots in the hair.) end of quote, what I want to be sure here is that this knot in the back of the head is either a pony tail or braids. The hadith that our brother abu hasan malik posted says it was "braids to the back"that were taken out during the prayer which raised an eye to wonder is their enough time take braids out of ones hair during the salah, where as ponytail with a knot seems to fit in where the Shaiykh Albani rahimtuallah has explained, but keep in mind what we want to check is the transliteration from arabic to english as I said it is the english translation I read, and maybe this question can be posed to the Ulimah for a clearer explanition Barak'Allahu Feekum

Assalaamu alaykum,

How do we understand the two ahadeeth below in relationship to the above?

Barakallahu feekum,
Umm Ayyub

Hadeeth No. 5533 - Narrated Ibn 'Abbas :
Once I stayed overnight in the house of my aunt Maimuna bint Al-Harith and Allah's Apostle was with her as it was her turn. Allah's Apostle got up to offer the night prayer. I stood on his left but he took hold of my two locks of hair and made me stand on his right.

Hadeeth No. 5534 - Narrated Abu Bishr:
the above Hadith) but he quoted: Ibn 'Abbas said, (took hold of) my two braids on my head."

isn't this plaiting style that the men are wearing from the current fashion of the kufaar?

so, it seems like the brothers should also be told about the obligation to differ from the kufaar.

Allaahu ta'aala aalam
