Asalamualaikum Wa rahmatullahi Wa barakaatuh,

We know that the Prophet sallallahu alayhe wasallam used to pray Qiyam al-Layl every night. For us, it is something Sunnah and greatly encouraged. So my question is, is it Sunnah for us to pray this every night or some nights? Either way, insha' Allah the reward is there, but I would think that a person praying it every night or most nights will have achieved more (Allahu 'alam) than someone praying it once in a while. But if the Sunnah is to pray it some nights, then would it seem like the latter person will get more rewarded for following the Sunnah of praying only on some nights?

As of now, I think the more you pray, the better, because of Ahaadith and Quranic verses such as:

They (the believers) forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope; and they spend out of what We have bestowed on them.ý [Soorah as-Sajdah (32): 16]

ýThey (the pious) used to sleep but little at night.ý [Soorah ath-Thariyat (51): 17]

Amr bin Abash (radhi allahu anhu) reported that Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: ýThe closest that a servant is to his Lord, is in the last part of the night. If you can be among those who remember Allah at that hour then do so.ý [(saheeh) by Shaikh al-Albanee (at-Tirmidhee)]

He (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) also said: ýThe most beloved prayer to Allah was of Dawud (alaihi as-salaam). He slept one half of the night, got up (and prayed) for one third, and then slept (the remaining) one sixth.ý [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim]

Aa'ishah (radhi allahu anha) said: ýDo not ever stop praying Qiyam. The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) never ceased praying it. When he was sick or weak, he prayed sitting.ý [(saheeh) by Shaikh al-Albanee (Abu Dawood)]

But if someone has other proofs that the Qiyam al-Layl is meant to be prayed only some nights and left on other nights, then please post it here so we may all benefit and understand this issue better.
