As-Salaamu' Alaikum people upon the fitrah.

My question concerns this term 'khaft' where, if it lies in the authentic athaar, and what is it's exact definition. I found its use in a small book called "Isbaal," I do not have the book on me so I cannot post the author. In it is a compilation of narrations concerning the correct length of the lower garment of the male and the female.

Is it permissible for a male to fold his pants over if they are too long and not cut them/ hem them to the correct length? I've seen brothers fold over the pants to get them to there correct length to remove them from the fire and some brothers fold them over once or twice after already cutting them above the ankle or up to the middle of the shin, in a stylistic way cuffing the pants legs. Is this permissible to do? The way he seems to explain it in this book is that it is not permissible. Please advise.

Also, I heard of a narration where the Prophet (sal Allahu' alayhe wa salaam) said not to cuff the sleeves of the garment or the pants but I did not get its authenticity. Is this narration authentic?

Do you know how the word 'khaft' was employed? Because based on what you have presented in the transliteration of the word (provided that the 't' at the end of the word is the soft 't'), then from among the meanings of 'khaft' is:

1-An utterance with a low, or suppressed, voice. This is with regards to speech. It is the opposite of 'jahr' or 'audible'. As found in the saheeh hadeeth
collected by al-Imaam an-Nasaa'ee in the Book of Janaazah, from Aboo Umaamah that he said: "The Sunnah during the prayer over the janaazah is that one should recite in the initial takbeer with the opening of the Book (al-Faatihah) mukhaafatan (that is with an inaudible voice)...

2-Weakness due to hunger and the like or weakness of the voice due to severe hunger.

So you need to find the book and check to see how the word was used, so that the students here will be better equipped to assist you and us.

Errors in Prayer That Must be Avoided

1) Wearing pants, or garments that hangs below the ankles.
This is one of the greatest sins. Abu Dtharr reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said, There are three people whom Allah shall not speak to on the Day of Resurrection, nor shall he look at them, nor shall he purify them, and they shall have a painful torment: One whose garment hangs down below his ankles, almanaan6, and (a merchant) who sells of his merchandise by means of false oath(7).

Some people think that wearing clothes that hang below the ankles is not a sin if they abstain from doing so while praying only. Others think that wearing such a garment is a sin only if it is worn out of pride; otherwise, they believe there is no harm in doing so. However, the above and many other traditions indicate clearly that wearing clothes that hang below the ankles (for men) is a grave sin regardless of whether such garments are worn out of habit or pride. There are other authentic traditions that emphasize wearing clothing that hangs below the ankles out of pride entails harsher punishment. Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) said The part of the garment which hangs below the ankles is (punishable by) Fire (on the Day of Resurrection)(8).

It is commonplace to see brothers folding up the hems of their pants for prayer. However, as soon as prayer is completed, they unfold their pants. The belief that wearing garments that hang below the ankles is prohibited during prayers only is a misconception commonly held by many Muslims. Such Muslims are unaware that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam) forbade praying with folded clothes (9). Based on this prohibition, scholars have agreed that praying with folded sleeves or pants is unlawful.

(End of quote from book)

Just an observation, the many ahadeeth that indicate the trailing of a garment and either the Prophet's or a Sahaabah's subsequent response entail either tugging up (lifting) or cutting as in the narration concerning Ameer Al Mu'mineen 'Umar bin Al-Khattab. Had folding been allowed surely there would have remained one narration to that effect.

Note also that in the hadeeth "and tug up your Izaar to the middle of your shins, and if you dislike it, then up to the ankles and beware of Isbaal because it is arrogance.'there is an implicit indication that Isbaal is itself considered arrogance.

That puts a bit of a damper on the claim of those that say they do not wear their garments below the ankle out of pride and therefore it is permissable for them.

[7]Sahih Muslim. The above hadeeth refers to a merchant who swears falsely that he is not making a profit in his merchandise or that it cost him too much in order to convince the customer to buy it.

[8]Sahih al-Bukhari

[9]Sahih Muslim

As-Salaamu' Alaikum.

The author to "Isbaal" is Dr. Saleh As-Saleh. My question here is not the correct length of the lower garment, but that you find the brothers adhering to the legislation of the sunnah but also folding the pants legs over once for stylistic fashion. Example being that a man's pants are above his ankles initially, but for style he folds over the bottom of his pant legs an inch or so over one time. Is it permissible to fold over the pants legs? Not before salaat to unfold after salaat or the case of one whose pants are below their ankles in a state of dalalaa so he rolls his pants legs over 3-4 or more times so that they are in a halal state. This individual should avoid the daily hastle and cut his pants to the correct length and the evidence has been made clear previously by mujaahidirlande. Sometimes sloppily one pant leg may fall over his ankles from doing this but this can be avoided. But again, the one who folds over, cuffs over, for style is this halal/ permissible for the male to do?

As-Salaamu' Alaikum wa'Rahman tu'Llahi wa berta'khatu Jami'aan,

Can one of the tullab please post an authentic dhaleel concerning this issue, the issue of cutting the pants above the ankle removing them from the fire wa'na'uuthu'bi'Lleh-but then, seemingly-stylistically folding the bottoms of the pants legs over a single 1" or 2" cuff, is this permissible? Some of the salafis posted this question on www.salafnotkhalaf.com insha-Allah seeking dhaleel as well, on a post by Taqiyyah concerning the correct length of the lower garment.
